Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear manager,
I hope all is well.
My name is Shivam Desai, and I have been working in the company as an accounts receivable for the past two years.
I am writing this letter to ask you to get a transfer to company's head office for upcoming six months. Since company's head office is in Toronto, and my hometown is also close to the city I would love to be transfered to the head office. The only reason I am asking for this transfer is my mother's health condition is not well. She has been suffering from a severe pain and I am her single child.
Transfering to head office will allow me to look after her, as the distance from my home to head office is only 20 minutes one way. Also, if could be transfered to the head office, I will look after all the duties and responsibilities assigned to me so far while working from the mail office. Moreover to this, if needed and if company wants, I can train my assosiate for petty things so that work could not get stopped even if I am away.
As a loyal employee to the company, I would really appreciated if you could make these arrangments possible. All I need is your approval and a documnent signed by you and management.
I hope you understand and support me.
Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the required bullet points, showing elements of a well-developed overall task response that earns it a solid position above the standard baseline. The writer clearly explains the personal and family reasons for wanting to work in the Toronto head office, addresses how duties will be managed remotely and through training an associate, and explicitly asks for managerial assistance and approval. However, the development of ideas remains slightly uneven. While the personal motivation regarding the mother's health is elaborated upon well, the explanation of how work will be handled lacks sufficient administrative detail, pointing to an area that stops the response from reaching a higher bracket. The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a workplace communication, effectively fulfilling the communicative purpose of the general task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from the initial greeting and introduction to the explanation of the request, concluding with a polite call to action. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, such as the personal context in one paragraph and the work coverage plans in another. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty. For instance, the transition 'Moreover to this' is awkward and unnatural, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the vague link between sentences in the discussion of office distance. These minor mechanical shortcomings keep the cohesion within the intermediate band, displaying a clear structure that nonetheless lacks the seamless flow of a fully proficient response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate vocabulary range appropriate for the task, successfully communicating personal circumstances and workplace requests. There are successful attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'accounts receivable', 'loyal employee', and 'approvals'. However, the vocabulary is marred by several noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation. For example, 'transfering' is misspelled, 'get a transfer' is less formal than desired, 'assosiate' contains an error, and phrases like 'petty things' or 'single child' reflect imprecise lexical choices that detract from precision. These lapses prevent the lexical range from achieving higher ratings, remaining typical of a mid-level performance where the vocabulary is minimally adequate yet contains persistent slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional clauses ('if needed and if company wants, I can train') and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors sprinkled throughout the text. Issues include prepositional and article inconsistencies, such as 'working in the company as an accounts receivable' instead of 'as an accounting clerk', 'company's head office' missing an article, and 'single child' instead of 'only child'. Verb forms also show occasional strain, as seen in 'condition is not well' and 'if could be transfered'. These errors are noticeable but rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammatical control securely within the mid-range level where simple sentences are handled well while complex attempts frequently contain minor flaws.
