Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

My name is Mansi Patel. i am writing to express my strong interest in spending six months working at our company head office in Germany.

Having abeen with the international marketing departement for three years, I am eager to gain a deeper understanding of our global strategies. working directly at the main headquarters will allow me to build stronger professional networks and learn new operational method that i can leter bring back to our regional branch.

I have carefully considered how my current responsisbilities will be handled during my absence. My colleague, sarah has agreed to take over my day to day projects management duties. Furthermore, i will be available online for a couple of hours each day to handle urgent issues and supervise the weekly team reports remotly.

I would be very greatful for your support and guidence in arranging this secondment with the HR departement. could we shedule a brief meeting next week to discuss this furture and set the ball rolling?

Thank you for considering my request. i look forward to your reply.

Yours Sincerely,

Mansi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all requirements of the task. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting to work in the head office in Germany, such as gaining a deeper understanding of global strategies and building professional networks. You also address how your work will be managed during your absence by detailing that your colleague Sarah will handle day-to-day project management while you remain available online for urgent issues and weekly reports. Finally, you successfully request help in arranging the secondment with HR and propose a meeting. The ideas are extended and supported well throughout the letter, giving it a clear purpose and professional tone, which places it securely at this level. To reach higher bands, you could ensure all bullet points are expanded with even more nuanced detail, such as specifying particular projects you wish to observe.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, reasons for the move, handling work in absence, and the call to action regarding arrangements. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Having been with'. The overall arrangement is coherent, though referencing and linking could be slightly more flexible to achieve top bands. For example, ensuring smoother transitions between sentences in the second body paragraph would enhance the flow. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and meets the requirements of a well-organised correspondence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace request, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'secondment', 'global strategies', and 'operational method'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, 'departement' is misspelled as 'departement' and 'departement', 'method' lacks a plural 'methods', 'leter' should be 'later', 'greatful' should be 'grateful', and 'guidence' should be 'guidance'. Additionally, 'shedule' is misspelled as 'shedule' and 'furture' should be 'future'. While these errors do not impede communication, correcting them and incorporating more precise collocations would elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You make use of a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including participial phrases like 'Having been with the international marketing departement for three years'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Notable issues include capitalization errors ('i am', 'sarah', 'remotly') and punctuation slips, such as missing commas or incorrect sentence boundaries. For example, 'working directly at the main headquarters...' begins with a lowercase letter in the prompt's context, and pronouns like 'i' are uncapitalised. To reach the next band, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict control over capitalization and punctuation.
