Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear manager,

My name is Himanshi Patel. I am working as a foreign accountant in your company. The purpose of this communication is to request you to give me an opportunity to work in a company's head office in different country for six months.

There are few reasons for my request. Firstly, I would like to know more about finance related to the overseas nations by working in the head office. In addition, this experience would help me to become more accurate in my current work, which will be beneficial for our company's growth.

On the other hand, I will make sure to manage my current work by doing it in advance. Apart from that, I will also try to remain in contact by doing it online. Therefore, my six months gap would not affect the company's normal operations.

It would greatly appreciate your consideration in this matter and anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt, earning a solid score. You clearly explain why you want to work in the head office by mentioning your desire to learn about overseas finance, describe how your work will be handled in advance and online, and ask for help in arranging the transfer. The purpose of the letter is evident and the tone is appropriately professional. To move into higher bands, some of these ideas could be extended further. For instance, explaining the exact nature of your online availability or detailing more specifically what kind of finance tasks you wish to study would provide a fully developed explanation rather than briefly touching on them. Nevertheless, all core requirements of the task have been addressed relevantly, and your position is consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical flow of ideas from your introduction through your reasons and solutions, ending with a polite call to action. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, with each main point housed in its own distinct paragraph, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You make use of standard transitional devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand' to link your thoughts together. However, some of these cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical or formulaic, and referencing can occasionally feel rigid. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for more seamless transitions between paragraphs and a smoother progression of ideas without relying heavily on standard sequencing words. Overall, the structure is clear and serves its purpose well.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message to the manager. You make good attempts at less common and professional workplace vocabulary, such as 'foreign accountant', 'overseas nations', and 'normal operations'. However, there are some minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score. For example, using 'finance related to the overseas nations' is slightly unnatural, and 'six months gap' would be more accurately expressed as a 'six-month absence' or 'six-month secondment'. Spelling and word forms are generally well controlled, and none of the lexical slips impede communication. To improve further, focus on natural collocations and a wider variety of precise phrasing suited to professional correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a reliable mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using clauses effectively to convey your request and supporting reasons. Examples include conditional and subordinate structures like 'which will be beneficial for our company's growth' and 'if I manage my current work'. Grammatical control is generally sound, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. There are some minor errors, most notably the passive voice construction in 'It would greatly appreciate your consideration', which should be active ('I would greatly appreciate') or phrased as 'Your consideration... would be greatly appreciated'. Other minor slips include the article omission in 'in a company's head office' (should be 'the company's head office'). These errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication, meeting the expectations for this level.
