Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Frank,
I hope you are doing well. I am sure you are aware that Toyota's California division is working on building a battery plant and is requesting support from engineers from their Canadian facilities. Due to the fact that the west coast plant is our main office, I would like to be a part of this group for a six-month contract.
Currently, I am working on the new vision system; however, the project is almost at the end and the only activity that's pending is monitoring the machine's effectiveness. As you know, Jack has been shadowing this project and is more than happy to takeover my role here once I move to the United States.
Furthermore, our headquarters in the states offers several discounted accommodation options near the manufacturing plant. Among these, I am interested to stay at the Toyota Park which has a gym and includes a free shuttle bus every morning to and from the office. I would really appreciate if you could book a room at this place.
Waiting on your response.
Yours faithfully,
Mihir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully cover all parts of the letter's prompt. You explain why you want to work at the head office through the mention of the battery plant project in California, describe how your work will be handled by stating that Jack has been shadowing you and can take over your role, and ask for help in arranging the stay. However, some parts are more fully developed than others. While the explanation of your current project and cover plan is clear, the request for help focuses heavily on accommodation details rather than a general request to arrange the transfer itself, leaving that specific bullet point slightly under-developed. Nevertheless, all requirements of the task are appropriately addressed with a clear and suitable tone for a manager.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the purpose of the move, to work coverage, and finally to accommodation requests. You use clear paragraphing, separating each main point into its own logical section. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Among these', although some referencing is slightly mechanical. To reach the highest band, transitions between sentences could flow even more naturally, and referencing could be smoother, but the structural organisation successfully guides the reader from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for a professional context, using phrases such as 'shadowing this project', 'manufacturing plant', and 'machine's effectiveness'. You attempt less common lexical items with general success, though there are a few minor slips in word choice or phrasing, such as 'interested to stay' instead of 'interested in staying', and 'Waiting on your response' instead of 'I look forward to hearing from you'. These minor errors do not impede communication and allow the message to be clearly conveyed throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional and dependent clauses effectively, such as in 'Due to the fact that the west coast plant is our main office, I would like to be a part of this group...' and 'As you know, Jack has been shadowing this project...'. There are some minor errors in grammar and punctuation, for instance writing 'takeover' as a single word instead of the verb phrase 'take over', and 'appreciate if you could' missing an object like 'appreciate it if'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, with many sentences remaining entirely error-free.
