Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Brown,

I am writing to request your permission to spend six months working at our company's head office in another country. I believe this opportunity would be extremely valuable for both my professional development and my contribution to the company.

The main reason I would like to work at the head office is to gain a better understanding of the company's international opertaion. I would also have the oppportunity to work closely with colleagues from different departements and learn new methods and technologies. I am confident that this experience would help me develop my skills and bring new ideas back to our local office.

While I am away, I can continue to complete most of my current responsibilities remotely. I would attend online meetings, communicate regularly with my team and use the company's digital systems to manage my tasks. I would also prepare a detalied handover plan for any duties that requires my physical presence.

I would greatly appreciate your help in arranging this temporary transfer, including contacting the head office and dicussing the necessary arrangement.

Thank you for condersing my request.

Your sincerely,

Dharni Dave

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. The purpose of writing is clearly stated in the opening, and all three bullet points from the prompt are fully covered. The writer explains the reasons for wanting to work at the head office, outlines how current responsibilities will be managed remotely including a handover plan, and politely asks for help with arrangements. The ideas are well extended and supported throughout the letter, reflecting a clear and appropriate tone suitable for a professional request to a manager.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the letter. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph addressing a distinct aspect of the prompt, such as the introduction, the reasons for the transfer, work coverage during absence, and the request for assistance. Cohesive devices such as 'While I am away', 'I would also', and 'including' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, although slightly more varied transitional phrasing could push the cohesion to an even higher level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, employing appropriate professional phrasing such as 'professional development', 'temporary transfer', and 'remotely'. Less common items are attempted with general awareness of style, though there are a few minor spelling errors like 'opertaion', 'oppportunity', 'departements', 'detalied', and 'condersing', alongside an incorrect word choice in 'Your sincerely'. These occasional lexical slips prevent the response from achieving a higher band, but they do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter displays a good variety of complex structures and frequent error-free sentences. The writer demonstrates strong control over modal verbs and conditional or hypothetical structures appropriate for a formal request, such as 'I am writing to request', 'I would greatly appreciate', and 'any duties that requires' (though subject-verb agreement slips slightly with the singular verb 'requires' instead of plural 'require'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are well controlled overall, maintaining a professional and grammatically sound standard throughout the text.
