Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear ramesh,

I hope you are doing well, I just wanted to convey a message to you that I am interested in working in head office for six months in canada. I've been working in the same department for almost 4 years and now after being the assistant manager of the department, I would like to get some international exposure which would help me to grow as a person and would also benefit the company. And during the time period of exposure in head office, suresh can take over my position and I would love to help him virtually if there is any problem or issue with work. It would be really helpful if you could help me with the arrangements and the approval of my proposal. Working in the head office would actually give a push to my career plans and becoming the general manager of any big corporation. I hope you understand and consider my request and approve it. Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering why you want to work in the head office, how your work will be managed via Suresh, and asking for help with arrangements. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. The explanation regarding international exposure and career growth is clearly presented, but the aspect of how your current work will be covered is slightly rushed and under-developed, lacking specific detail on operational handovers. Because all bullet points are addressed with relevant ideas, but some lack full extension, the response sits firmly at this level, showing elements of complete task coverage alongside some underdeveloped points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement, and the purpose of the communication is clear to the reader from the beginning. However, the organisation is hindered by a lack of proper paragraphing, as the entire body of the letter is written as one single block of text. Cohesive devices are also somewhat mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on conjunctions like 'and' and run-on structures without adequate separation of ideas. Referencing is mostly clear, but the absence of logical paragraph breaks prevents the text from achieving a clearer overall progression and structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully conveying your message about career progression and workplace responsibilities. You attempt less common vocabulary items such as 'international exposure', 'corporation', and 'arrangements' with reasonable success, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'working in head office' without a necessary article. Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow your intent. To reach a higher level, a wider and more precise range of less common lexical items with natural collocations should be incorporated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'which would help me to grow as a person'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including comma splices and run-on sentences like 'I hope you are doing well, I just wanted to convey...', as well as missing capitalisation for proper nouns such as 'ramesh', 'canada', and 'suresh'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the core meaning remains clear. You show good control over basic verb tenses, but a greater variety of error-free complex structures and tighter punctuation control are needed to progress further.
