Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request you to allow me working in our head office for six months.

My name is Parminder Singh and I have been working in your company for last two years. Actually, I want to work in our head office in Chandigarh for several reasons. Firstly, the head office branch is very close to my hometown, and I have to make arrangements for my sister marriage. While working in head office, I can complete my family responsibilities and it also allows me to spend some quality time with my family.

For my current job duties, I can fully manage by working remotely. In addition, I also ask my colleagues to share my office-based work load between each other.

I would really appreciate it if you could make the necessary arranges at your earliest convenience. It would be great if you could ask IT staff to give me access for working remotely from my home country.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining the reason for wanting to move to the head office, proposing how work can be handled remotely, and requesting help with the arrangements. All three bullet points are covered, giving the letter a clear purpose and an appropriate semi-formal tone. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation regarding the sister's marriage and family responsibilities is introduced but not fully expanded upon in terms of business impact. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need to be extended with greater depth and fully realized detail throughout every section of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped into sensible paragraphs, with the opening stating the purpose, the second and third paragraphs addressing the bullet points, and the final paragraphs providing a polite closing. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as transitional phrases like 'Firstly' and 'In addition'. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraphing could be slightly tighter to enhance the flow between the work arrangements and the personal reasons. The overall arrangement is coherent, allowing the reader to follow the writer's intentions easily without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'remotely', 'arrangements', and 'earliest convenience', though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'allow me working' instead of 'allow me to work' and 'arranges' instead of 'arrangements'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, a wider and more precise range of less common lexical items with better stylistic control would need to be demonstrated consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and infinitive phrases effectively. There are some errors in grammar, such as the gerund error in 'request you to allow me working' and the prepositional phrase 'for last two years' instead of 'for the last two years', as well as a tense slip in 'I also ask my colleagues'. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the punctuation is generally well controlled. To reach the next level, the writer would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate tighter control over verb complements and prepositions.
