Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well!
I am writing this letter to request your approval and support for an opportunity of working in our head office in United States. As our BU head wants me to work on HIPAA based SRA for US sites for which I need to understand the scope of sites and organizational chart there. I had already completed it for India and Philippines sites successfully.
And for better understanding of the scope and a successful completion for US sites, it is required to visit the location. I really want to grab this opporunity fully by working in head office. The project will take six months and I am ready with a complete project plan with timelines. Along with this task, it will also be a great opportunity for my personal growth, experience, and exposure. I will get to learn their work culture by interacting with our colleagues and counter part there. Also, I will be able to identify many new site specific risks which will help us to improve our security posture.
So, I would like to request you to kindly provide your approval and support me in getting BU head's go ahead on this.
Thank you in advance for considering my request, I am looking forward for your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, though the coverage of individual bullet points varies. You effectively explain why you want to work in the head office by citing your project requirements for HIPAA-based SRA and personal growth, and you clearly ask for your manager's help in securing approval. However, the requirement to explain how your work could be done while you are away is handled less fully than the others. While you mention being ready with a complete project plan, the explanation of how your current responsibilities will be managed during your six-month absence is under-developed. To reach a higher band, all bullet points would need to be equally well-extended with specific operational details about your day-to-day workload coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
There is a coherent overall arrangement to the letter, presenting a logical progression from stating the purpose of the letter to explaining the project background, detailing the request, and concluding with a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate your greeting, main points, and conclusion. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or abrupt, particularly with transitions like 'And for better understanding' starting a sentence, and 'So, I would like to request you'. Referencing is generally clear, but some cohesive devices are slightly repetitive. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between sentences and paragraphs would need to be smoother and more sophisticated, ensuring the flow of ideas is completely natural without relying on basic conjunctions at the start of sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common business and project-related terms such as 'organizational chart', 'security posture', and 'counter part'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'in United States' instead of 'in the United States', and spelling 'opportunity' as 'opporunity'. Additionally, 'go ahead' is informal, and 'counter part' is typically written as a single word. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from rising. To reach the next band, you would need to use a wider range of precise lexical items consistently with fewer errors in spelling and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as in your explanation about the BU head wanting you to work on HIPAA-based SRA. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('an opportunity of working' and 'in United States'), tense inconsistency ('I had already completed it' where the simple past 'I already completed it' is more appropriate), and preposition usage ('looking forward for your response' instead of 'looking forward to'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move higher, you would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict control over articles and prepositions.
