Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my desire to work for the company from its head office in New York. I am currently working in India in the north Indian division.
I have been working in this company from last four years, although I like working here, I would like to have the experience of working from the company headquarters. I believe that it would be beneficial for my credentials and I would also like to learn about their work culture. I have heard that they have a different work ethic and I would like to experience that.
While I work from New York, I would make sure everything here goes smoothly as well. I could give an elaborate knowledge transfer to my team before I leave. In addition to that I would also be available during the working hours if the need arise.
I would be highly obliged if you could recommend me for the New York office as it would be very helpful coming from a senior employee like yourself.
Kindly let me know if anything is required from my end and I would be looking forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Prabjyot Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter clearly addresses all three points: you explain your motivation through gaining headquarters experience and learning about the work culture, describe a handover and continued availability, and ask your manager to recommend you. Your purpose and polite request remain clear throughout. The reasons are relevant and supported, particularly the link between the placement and your professional credentials. To strengthen the response further, make the practical arrangement more specific: for example, explain how your responsibilities would be covered, how you would stay in contact, or what support you need from your manager beyond a recommendation. This would develop the proposed plan more fully rather than leaving some details general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose and current role, reasons for the placement, arrangements during your absence, and a closing request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “In addition to that” connect related arrangements. The progression is logical and the formal opening and closing suit the task. Some connections could be more precise and less formulaic; for instance, “In addition to that” could be replaced with a direct link to the handover plan. The final two sentences also repeat the request for a response in a slightly general way. A more focused closing that identifies the next step would make cohesion more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of formal and workplace-related vocabulary, including “headquarters,” “credentials,” “work culture,” “knowledge transfer,” and “recommend me.” These choices communicate the purpose effectively and show some flexibility beyond basic wording. However, a few expressions are less natural or precise in this context, such as “an elaborate knowledge transfer” and “highly obliged”; more idiomatic phrasing would improve collocation and tone. “Different work ethic” is also broad, as it may refer to an individual attitude rather than an organisation’s practices. The vocabulary is generally clear, but more consistently natural phrasing and precise workplace terms would strengthen control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, including the concession in “although I like working here” and the conditional proposal “I could give…”. Many sentences are accurate and easy to understand, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few grammatical slips remain: “I have been working in this company from last four years” uses an unsuitable time preposition and omits an article, while “if the need arise” has a subject–verb agreement error. The opening sentence also joins two independent clauses with only a comma. Review present-perfect time expressions, agreement, and sentence boundaries; these corrections would make the otherwise clear grammar more consistently controlled.
