Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to express my interest in spending six months at your company's head office in Canada.
Although I am satisfied with current role, I wanted to explore foreign nations for its cultual heritage and financial growth. Not only can allows me to explore its culture but also it allows me to have opportunities to try their cuisines and learn a new language.
I have already spoken to my teammates, who can handle all my pending tasks. In addition, I could use my free time to review progress of project and make sure it will meet its deadline.
Can I ask you little favour in arranging my flight tickets and accomodation for six months from company budget? I heard that you are offering a chance to go abroad for working and living for a short period of time along with cost covers from company budget.
I would be really appriciate if you can consider in this matter at your early convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Chris

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in the Canadian head office, describe how teammates could cover pending tasks, and ask your manager to help arrange the move. The reasons—experiencing another culture, trying local food, and learning a language—are relevant, but the link between these benefits and working specifically at the head office could be explained more fully. The work-cover plan is also only partly developed: you mention teammates and reviewing a project, but do not clarify how your usual responsibilities would be managed during the six months. Your request focuses on flights and accommodation rather than broader help arranging the placement. The letter is purposeful, though fuller explanation and a more clearly framed request would make it more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose, gives reasons, explains work coverage, and then makes a request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking phrases such as “In addition” and “Although” show an attempt to connect ideas. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. The sentence beginning “Not only can allows me” is difficult to follow, and “I heard that you are offering a chance” does not clearly connect the company’s offer to your specific request. The final sentence also refers vaguely to “this matter.” Use clearer references and make the relationship between each reason and the request explicit to create smoother progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “head office,” “pending tasks,” “project,” “deadline,” and “accommodation.” There is some variety in how you express your reasons, but several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “cultual,” “accomodation,” and “appriciate” are misspelled, while “financial growth” is unclear as a personal reason for wanting to work abroad. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “explore foreign nations for its cultural heritage” and “cost covers from company budget.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the letter sound more natural and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “Although” and the “Not only … but also” construction. However, some errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence structure make parts of the letter awkward. For example, “I am satisfied with current role” needs an article, and “Not only can allows me” combines incompatible verb forms. In “I would be really appriciate if you can consider,” the verb pattern and conditional form are not controlled. The sentence about reviewing progress also needs clearer grammatical framing. These issues do not obscure the overall purpose, but greater control of complex structures and more accurate verb patterns would improve clarity.
