Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my intention about working in our head office in New Zealand. I would like to work around six (6) in the head office.

Primarily I would say this will help me to gain quality experience in my professional carrier. particularly in Human Resource Management. I assume if I can obtain this opportunity it will help to improve our branch management works and efficiency.

Moreover, I would like to clarify how to allocate my duties during this time off period of office works. My colleague Mr. Mike agreed to carry on my duties in this six month of period. he already knows everything that need to be done.

I would like to kindly request you to support Mr. Mike in case of need and I would really appreciate.

If you have any concerns about this matter please tell me without any hesitation. If can grant me this time off I would appreciate it.

Thanks you for the time and attention on this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Udaya Waduge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain that working in New Zealand would build your professional experience, identify Mike as the colleague who could cover your duties, and ask your manager to support the arrangement. The purpose is clear and relevant. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The benefit to the branch is mentioned as improved management and efficiency, but you do not explain how your experience would produce those improvements. Similarly, the handover plan would be more convincing if you described how Mike would receive guidance or how you would remain available. A more specific request for the manager’s help with approval or practical arrangements would also make the letter more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a generally logical order: you state your request, explain your motivation, describe cover for your duties, and ask for support. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “If you have any concerns” make the progression easy to follow. This is a sound overall structure. To make the organisation more polished, give each paragraph a clearer single purpose and connect the handover details more explicitly to your proposed absence. Some transitions feel formulaic, and the final two requests repeat the idea of seeking approval. Combining them into one concise closing request would improve flow. Clearer references to the six-month arrangement throughout would also help the reader follow the plan.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant workplace vocabulary, including “head office,” “Human Resource Management,” “branch management,” and “allocate my duties,” so the main message is understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “express my intention” and “kindly request.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “professional carrier” appears to mean “professional career,” while “time off period of office works” does not clearly describe the proposed assignment. “Quality experience” and “carry on my duties” could also be expressed more naturally in this context. Aim for precise, conventional workplace language and check spelling and word forms, especially in phrases that carry the central meaning of your request.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I assume if I can obtain this opportunity it will help…” and “If you have any concerns about this matter…”. The intended meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “I would like to work around six (6) in the head office” omits a time unit, and “he already knows everything that need to be done” has a subject–verb agreement error. Capitalisation after full stops is inconsistent, as in “he already,” and the closing sentence “If can grant me this time off” lacks a subject. Review sentence completeness, agreement, articles, and punctuation, while continuing to practise complex sentences with accurate clause structure.
