IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You work for an international company, and would like to spend six months working in its head office in another country. Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- explain why you want to work in the company's head office for six months
- say how your work could be done while you are away
- ask for his/her help in arranging it
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I hope this letter finds you well. The purpose of this letter is to request my transfer for six months to China head office in order to learn advanced techniques for our work.
As you know I have been working as a senior manager in our branch for more than 5 years and now I have realized that our working methods are outdated and we need to improve them for more productivity. By working in China for several months I will not only learn new ways of operating a system in a faster way but will also try to implement them here in India simultaneously.
Since I will be working remotely, I will respond all the queries by email at my earliest convenience. Moreover, I will train my assistant to take care of all the physical work and will always be available on call whenever needed.
I would like you to arrange this transfer in China for me because you are always involved in international businesses. I believe your well-developed relations with other managers can make this request become possible.
I hope you take my request into consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requirements clearly: you explain that you want to learn advanced techniques, describe how you would handle queries and delegate physical duties, and ask your manager to arrange the transfer. Your reason is supported by your experience in the branch and the need to improve working methods, while the closing maintains a suitably polite request. The proposal is relevant and generally well developed, although the practical arrangements could be more specific—for example, how you would coordinate with your assistant or whether remote work would be combined with working at the head office. This clear coverage and supporting explanation make the letter effective; adding a little more detail about the arrangement would make the ideas more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from the request and its rationale to your proposed work arrangements and the appeal for help. Paragraphing is appropriate, and links such as “Moreover” and “Since” help show how the ideas relate. The final paragraph and sign-off also give the letter a complete, professional shape. Cohesion is generally effective, though some transitions are a little formulaic, particularly “The purpose of this letter” and “I hope you take my request into consideration.” You could make the progression feel more natural by linking the practical plan directly to the manager’s role in approving or coordinating the placement. Overall, the organisation is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of workplace vocabulary, including “advanced techniques,” “outdated,” “productivity,” “remotely,” and “implement.” These choices communicate your purpose and show some flexibility beyond basic vocabulary. However, a few phrases are imprecise or do not collocate naturally: “learn new ways of operating a system in a faster way” is wordy, “respond all the queries” is not idiomatic, and “make this request become possible” is awkward. “Physical work” is also vague in this context. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the language. Aim for concise, conventional workplace expressions while retaining the useful range already shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a good mix of sentence forms, including the complex structure “By working in China for several months I will not only learn … but will also try to implement them here in India.” Most sentences are clear, and the conditional and future forms are generally controlled. A few grammatical slips remain: “I will respond all the queries” needs “to” after “respond,” and “our working methods are outdated and we need to improve them” would be clearer with punctuation or a conjunction separating the independent clauses. The opening request, “request my transfer for six months to China head office,” also has an awkward grammatical construction. These are limited issues in an otherwise readable letter; more consistent control of prepositions and sentence boundaries would strengthen accuracy.
