Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to request to promote myself in company's head office for six months.

Due to my expertise in different work environment. I would like to work in company's head department, where I can showcase my skills to the higher officials and learn the entire process of manufacturing, sequencing, and most important managing the orders.

When I am away my colleague will handle my routine tasks and respond to any urgent requests. I will complete all necessary assignments before my leave and prepare detailed notes about ongoing work.

I would highly appreciate if you could arrange paperwork for visa application. Moreover, any referrals regarding accomodation would be highly advantageous.

Thankyou for your understanding and support. I am waiting for your prompt response.

Yours Sincerely,

Saniya khan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to develop your skills and learn about the head office’s processes, describe how a colleague could cover routine work, and ask your manager to help with visa paperwork and accommodation advice. The purpose is clear and the ideas are relevant. However, the reason for the six-month placement is only briefly explained, and the work-cover plan would benefit from more practical detail, such as how you would stay in contact or manage urgent decisions. The response also contains 130 words, so it does not meet the 150-word minimum. Develop these points further while keeping the letter focused and appropriately formal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: the request comes first, followed by your reasons, the proposed work arrangements, and the request for assistance. Separate paragraphs make the different purposes easy to follow, and transitions such as “Moreover” help connect related requests. The progression is logical throughout. To make the links more natural and precise, connect the opening request more directly to the explanation that follows, and clarify how the colleague’s cover relates to your own responsibilities during the placement. The closing sentences could also be combined or varied to avoid a slightly formulaic ending. Overall, the reader can follow the message without difficulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of workplace vocabulary, including “expertise,” “routine tasks,” “urgent requests,” “assignments,” and “ongoing work.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate for a manager. Some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “request to promote myself” does not clearly express a request for a temporary placement, and “head department” is not the usual term for the company’s head office. There are also spelling and form issues in “accomodation” and “Thankyou.” Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple sentences and a more developed clause, as in “When I am away my colleague will handle my routine tasks and respond to any urgent requests.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the sentence structures are generally controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, including the missing article in “in company’s head office” and the sentence fragment “Due to my expertise in different work environment.” The request “I would highly appreciate if you could arrange…” also needs a more complete grammatical construction, such as “I would highly appreciate it if…”. Review articles, singular and plural forms, and sentence completeness. Greater accuracy in these areas would strengthen an otherwise clear message.
