Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some part of US, a time restriction at night for outing is implemented for children above thirteen and a parent or guardian must be there to accompany them. In my opinion, this law is justified for various reasons like safety and protection from bad influence which will be elaborated in further paragraphs.

To begin with, the main concern is safety. At night, it is common that crime like kidnapping, killing, etc. can occured. As a result, an adult must join their children at night if they are heading out. These will protect them from criminals as well as bad intentions of them. This reason justifies the curfew enforced by the government.

Besides that, the other reason includes protection from bad influence. To explain, people who are doing drugs or involve in some non-social activities can influence the teenagers if they are out alone at night.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

Your position is clear: you support curfews, citing safety and protection from harmful influences. These are relevant reasons, and the opening signals that you will explain them. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: the safety point is briefly asserted, while the second reason ends without explaining how curfews would prevent teenagers from being influenced or giving an example. The prompt asks for reasons and relevant examples, but none are developed sufficiently, and there is no concluding statement. The response is also 104 words below the required minimum, which leaves too little space to develop your opinion. To improve, explain each reason with a specific example and add a conclusion that restates your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction is followed by two reason paragraphs, and signposts such as “To begin with” and “Besides that” help identify the sequence. This gives the reader a basic sense of organisation. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited because the ideas are not fully explained, and the second paragraph stops abruptly after introducing the possibility of harmful influence. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “reason” and “To explain.” The reference in “These will protect them” is also unclear because it could refer to the adults or the curfew. Develop each paragraph through explanation and an example, use clearer referencing, and add a concluding paragraph to make the overall progression more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “curfew,” “safety,” “protection,” “criminals,” and “influence.” These choices make your general meaning understandable. However, the range is limited, and several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “time restriction at night for outing,” “bad intentions of them,” and “non-social activities.” “Crime like kidnapping, killing” is also an unnatural way to describe examples of crime. Aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of topic vocabulary, such as describing risks as “violent crime” or harmful activities as “antisocial behaviour.” More accurate phrasing would make your argument clearer and more natural, especially when explaining the reasons for supporting a curfew.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a time restriction … which …” and a conditional structure in “if they are heading out.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the paragraphing helps the reader follow the basic argument. However, errors remain in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “crime … can occured” should use the base form after “can,” and “These will protect them” does not agree clearly with its intended subject. The opening sentence also has an awkwardly constructed clause, while the final sentence is incomplete as an explanation. Practise accurate modal verb patterns and build complete sentences that clearly connect each claim to its supporting explanation.
