Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, which restrict teenagers to go out particularly at night. Although, it is good for those who lives in dangerous places, it is restricting their freedom. I believe the teenagers should be accompanies by an adult for their increased safety.

On the one hand, while youth do not require adult supervision for their routine tasks, they should be accompanied by adults when they are going out at night for their own safety, as the criminals may harm them while they are alone. For instance, there are few places in the USA where people under the influence of drugs are targeting teenagers to steal money to buy drugs. This can be avoided if they are accompanied by an adult, because the criminals will not involve with adults to avoid being caught. Not only does this improve their safety, but it also reduces crime conducted by teenagers. Since, they are accompanied by an adult there are less chances that they will be involved in criminal activities.

On the other hand, many may feel their privacy and freedom has been taken away, but adults should allow teenagers to make their own decision while they are out to make them independent and guide them whenever it's necessary. For instance, adults should teach teenagers about which path to avoid during night, and also they should teach them to be attentive.

To conclude, I firmly believe that by imposing a curfew in some areas will help teenagers to remain safe while roaming at night.

Overall6.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed the prompt by providing a clear opinion on the curfew issue. The response is well-structured, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, and a conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide examples, such as the mention of drug-related crime, the argument could be strengthened by exploring the long-term social implications of such curfews or providing more nuanced reasoning. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6.0, as some points are stated rather than fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized, with clear paragraphing that separates the different viewpoints. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader through your argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow. For example, the sentence 'Since, they are accompanied by an adult there are less chances...' is slightly clunky. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'supervision', 'independent', and 'criminal activities'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'restrict teenagers to go out' (should be 'restrict teenagers from going out') and 'criminals will not involve with adults' (should be 'criminals will not engage with adults'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, the errors occasionally show a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, focus on more natural collocations and precise word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('those who lives' instead of 'those who live') and incorrect preposition usage. Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'Since'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy in basic grammar will help improve your score in this criterion.
