Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some parts of the United States a 'curfew' is imposed which prevents teenagers from going outdoors in night hours until unless they are accompanied by an adults. I strongly support this view, because there are chances teenagers make mistakes which negatively impacts on their lives. I would like to elaborate more reasons and examples in following paragraph.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is only 112 words long. Consequently, the development of ideas is severely limited. While the student clearly states their position in support of the curfew, they do not provide the necessary supporting arguments or relevant examples required by the task instructions. The essay essentially repeats the introductory premise twice rather than expanding on the topic. Because the response is significantly under-length and lacks the depth required for a full task response, it cannot be awarded a score higher than Band 4.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The text is very short, making it difficult to assess the full range of cohesive devices. There is a clear attempt at paragraphing, although the repetition of the introductory paragraph indicates a lack of logical progression. The use of basic cohesive devices like 'because' and 'this essay will' is present, but the overall structure is underdeveloped. The response is coherent in its limited scope, but it lacks the sophisticated management of ideas and paragraphing expected at higher bands. Given the brevity, the organization is basic and repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. Phrases such as 'going outdoors', 'make mistakes', and 'negatively impact' are functional but lack the range and precision required for higher band scores. There is no attempt to use less common or idiomatic vocabulary. The repetition of the introductory paragraph also limits the demonstration of lexical range. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise synonyms and academic collocations to express their ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'until unless they are accompanied by an adults', where the plural 'adults' is incorrect after the singular article 'an'. Additionally, the sentence 'there are chances teenagers make mistakes' is slightly awkward. While the meaning is generally clear, the grammatical control is inconsistent. The range of structures is limited by the short length of the text, preventing a demonstration of more complex or varied sentence patterns.
