Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some areas of the United State, young people are not permitted to go outside at night if an adult is not with them. I strongly believe that a curfew has numerous advantages than drawbacks such as prevent to do illegal activities and protect from becoming victim of offences.

The curfew is an extremely important for adolescences in midnight in today's world. Firstly, this prohibition stops to them doing criminal activities. In other words, they have vulnerable minds and do not be aware of right and wrong things. As a result, if this age group individuals are allowed to go out of doors after evening time, they might involve in inappropriate activities like smoking, drug addiction and alcohol consumption as these would be easy to do in darkness.

Moreover, this banned saves their lives because in recent years, a increasing the numbers of offenders who hurt, shoot or kill anyone. For example a recent survey is shown that in Canada, increasing the rate of murders by inmates who focus on teenagers, especially at night time due to less people surroundings. Therefore, the curfew is necessary to reduce the safety risk.

Nonetheless, it is often argue that this can hinder youngsters development because many work at restaurants till midnight or late night study. It can prohibit their personal growth. However, demerits are more than benefits.

In conclusion, although the curfew in night time may snatch freedom of teenagers in order to develop their careers, I opine that this regulation can prevent youth to engage in unauthorized activities as well as save their precious lives from harsh crimes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of curfews. The ideas are relevant, focusing on crime prevention and safety. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the argument regarding criminal activities is clear, the supporting example about Canada is slightly vague and lacks a direct link to the specific context of US curfews. The counter-argument is acknowledged but could be more thoroughly explored to demonstrate a more balanced perspective. Overall, the position is consistent throughout, and the main points are adequately supported for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Nonetheless', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the second and third paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, but some phrasing, such as 'this banned', is awkward and hinders the smooth progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'adolescences' (though incorrectly used as a noun for the people), 'vulnerable minds', and 'unauthorized activities'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'prevent to do' instead of 'preventing', 'a increasing the numbers' instead of 'an increase in the number', and 'snatch freedom' instead of 'restrict freedom'. These errors occasionally impact the precision of the message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('a recent survey is shown'), incorrect verb forms ('do not be aware'), and article misuse ('in midnight'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often hampered by these persistent errors. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score, as the control over complex structures is not yet consistent.
