IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult.
What is your opinion about this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Offenses related and originated from the social media and drug abuse by teenagers are very serious matters for the safety and well-being of any community around the world. The city of Los Angeles has been topping the list of such criminal offenses for last 3 years. Considering this streak as one of the major challenges the city is facing right now, the state government has declared a curfew for the children and for the teenagers from 9pm to 5am unless the people from this particular age group are accompanied by an adult.
In my opinion the action by the state Government is plausible. Youth is considered as a future of any nation, safeguarding them must be the top most priority. While several programs of general safety awareness are functional and are being frequently held at schools, the curfew will solidify the purpose of the state officials.
Lastly, I would like to add that younger generation across the world is heavily influenced by the social media. They tend to take up any trend just for some likes and popularity on the social media platform. This may lead them to a dangerous situations as predators usually exploit such platforms. There was an online game named, Blue whale, in which players of the game had to complete a daily task dictated by the game itself. Gradually over days the task gets harder and more misaligned with the societal standards. Teenagers got so addicted that some unfortunates had to loose their lives in order to achieve tasks. I think this could be averted if the curfew is in place after dark and family members could also help in breaking their addiction and lead them to a more productive lifestyle.
I presume that remaining at home could be boring for many teenagers as they could have been playing outside with their friends or having a fun night-over; yet the curfew could guarantee a safety and a peace of mind for their parents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear opinion in favor of the curfew. You have provided relevant reasons, such as the influence of social media and the need for parental supervision. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The example of the 'Blue Whale' game is quite specific and interesting, but it is not directly linked to the effectiveness of a curfew in preventing such online activities, as these can occur at any time of day. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces your central argument about the curfew's utility.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In my opinion', 'Lastly', and 'I presume', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the use of referencing could be more precise. For example, the link between the 'Blue Whale' anecdote and the conclusion about the curfew is a bit abrupt. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'plausible', 'safeguarding', 'predators', and 'averted'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'offenses related and originated from' (should be 'originating from') and 'unfortunates had to loose their lives' (should be 'lose'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the control is not always consistent. To improve, focus on collocations and ensure that words are used in their correct grammatical form to convey your meaning more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Youth is considered as a future' (should be 'the future'), 'the state Government' (capitalization error), and 'a dangerous situations' (plural/article mismatch). Additionally, 'the city of Los Angeles has been topping the list... for last 3 years' requires an article ('the last 3 years'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve accuracy.
