Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some regions of the US imply a deadline for teenagers to be outside after a certain time at night unless accompanied by an adult. Some people consider it restrictive; I believe it is a reasonable measure to ensure public safety and protect youth from negative influence.

One of the major benefits of such a rule is the safety of youngsters. Teenagers will be less involved in crime and inhumane activities. Late at night, there are fewer people on the streets, making them more vulnerable to violence & accidents. By requiring teenagers to stay at home or be accompanied by an adult, local authorities can ensure their safety. In addition, curfew may discourage juvenile crime.

Another advantage of such an arrangement is that it can help them develop healthy lifestyles. Youngsters who stay out late at night often perform poorly in school due to lack of sleep. They also experience physical and mental instability. Knowing that they have to reach home at a fixed time makes them responsible. Parents can also monitor their child's activity and maintain family life.

However, some people feel this limits teenagers' freedom. They also think they are irresponsible, which is the reason not allowed out late at night.. Nevertheless, the restriction only applies during late-night hours and usually allows exceptions when an adult is present. Therefore, it strikes a balance between personal freedom and public safety.

In conclusion, I believe that curfew at night for teenagers is a sensible policy. Even though it places some limitations on individuals, the benefits of improved safety, reduced crime, and healthier lifestyles outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas regarding safety, crime reduction, and personal responsibility are relevant and well-supported. The argument is extended with logical reasoning, such as the link between late-night activities and academic performance. While the development is generally solid, some points could be further nuanced to reach a higher band, such as providing a more specific example of how a curfew might be implemented in a real-world context. Overall, the response is focused and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Another advantage', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the relationship between ideas is clear. There is a slight mechanical feel to some of the transitions, but the overall flow is coherent and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for the task. The student uses some good collocations like 'public safety', 'negative influence', and 'juvenile crime'. There are a few instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'imply a deadline' (should be 'impose a curfew') and 'inhumane activities' (which is a bit strong for typical teenage behavior). However, the range is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly, and the errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. Some minor errors exist, such as the punctuation error at the end of the fourth paragraph ('..') and the slightly awkward phrasing in the first sentence ('imply a deadline'). However, the majority of sentences are error-free, and the grammatical control is consistent. The use of complex structures is present but could be more varied to demonstrate higher-level proficiency.
