Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that during a curfew teenagers should be restricted to go out at night time. I completely agree with the perspective because of the safety reason and violence crime.

First and foremost, implementing a curfew for teenagers plays a vital role in keeping them safe at night. This is primarily because during late hours, the crime rate increases significantly on the streets. For instance, in many cities in the US, when young teenagers are out without their parents, they are more likely to get involved in fight, or illegal racing. As a result, restricting them to stay at home after a specific time reduces the chances of involvement in crime and also they can be more safer from involving the use of drugs and smokes.

On the other hand, curfews help teenagers to build good daily habits and focus on their education. The main rationale behind this argument is that staying outdoors late at night ruins their sleep cycle, that directly affects their performance in school. To illustrate, many high school students feel tired as they had spent their evening hanging out with friends. Therefore, forcing a strict timing ensures that they go to bed early and prioritize their studies over useless activities.

In conclusion, I think that due to safety reasons and violence activities one should not allow their kids to go out during night time when a curfew is imposed. Also, the children can invest the time in building their future by acquiring new skills and techniques.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding safety and academic performance are relevant and logically developed. However, the development is somewhat basic; for instance, the mention of 'illegal racing' and 'drugs and smokes' is a good start, but could have been expanded with more nuanced analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To improve, ensure that ideas are explored with more depth rather than just listing potential risks, as this would demonstrate a more sophisticated engagement with the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better pronoun referencing to avoid repeating the same subjects. Overall, the structure is sound and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'ruins their sleep cycle' and 'prioritize their studies'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'violence crime' (should be 'violent crime') and 'more safer' (a grammatical error that also affects lexical precision). To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise word choices and avoid redundant phrasing like 'useless activities' or 'techniques' when referring to general life skills.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'restricted to go out' (should be 'restricted from going out'), 'more safer' (double comparative), and 'violence activities' (should be 'violent activities'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy is the key to improvement.
