In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult.
What is your opinion about this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Increasing drug and alcohol use in teenagers has made the US government to imply house arrest lockdowns on them after the sun down with an exception of only going out if under the supervison of an adult.
From the past few months, there are news all over the place about underage drinkers and intoxication because of the peer pressure and bad influence. It has been a major concern among many families as many children do not come home for days and are missing because they are always hanging out with their friends or under the influence of drugs. This has also increased the amount of crime occurring in the neighbourhood by our youth. This is a very serious issue to be addressed as it is affecting our future generation's time and talent.
In addition to this, i believe this curfew will help bring down the intensity of this matter. It would help reduce random rave parties happening underground and also decrease the number of illegal businesses that were benefiting from selling their goods and services to these kids. It would also help increase the valuable time that teenagers would be spending with their siblings and family and help them get more emotionally connected to them.
In conclusion, i believe this curfew should stay as long as changes have not been observed. And help should be given to people who are in need. There should be mental health classes occurring to help children and improve their overall wellbeing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear opinion in favor of the curfew. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited, and the essay falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement. While the arguments regarding crime reduction and family bonding are relevant, they are not fully extended with specific examples or deep analysis. The introduction uses the term 'house arrest,' which is a slight misinterpretation of a curfew, as a curfew typically restricts movement in public spaces rather than confining individuals to their homes. To improve, ensure you meet the word count and provide more detailed, concrete examples to support your claims.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. There is a clear progression from the problem to the proposed solution. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'In addition to this,' 'It would also help'). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion, which provides a clear structure. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the flow between sentences is more natural and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'imply house arrest' instead of 'impose a curfew' and 'sun down' instead of 'sunset.' Phrases like 'news all over the place' are too informal for an IELTS essay. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'intoxication' and 'wellbeing,' the overall range is limited. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding informal or colloquial expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'made the US government to imply' (should be 'made the US government impose') and 'From the past few months' (should be 'Over the past few months'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor errors in capitalization, such as the lowercase 'i' used for the first-person pronoun. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb patterns after causative verbs would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
