Student answer (Band 6.5)
In some parts of the USA, teenagers are not allowed to go outdoors after a certain time at night; a curfew is imposed for them unless they are with an adult. In my view, it is the best decision because it is for the safety of the younger generation and to protect them from meeting bad people.
The fundamental reason is the safety of teenagers. To justify, young people often adopt any habit, whether it is bad or good; as a result, they are vulnerable to committing crimes, violence and other dangerous activities. For instance, according to research, in many urban areas, crime happens at midnight, and young people are involved in it.
Another reason is that curfew plays a vital role in teenagers' education and well-being. Adequate sleep is essential for mental health, concentration and academic performance. If they are staying outside for so long, they will feel tired and exhausted the next day at school. Furthermore, an adult is required with them for guidance and to oversee them to reach home safely.
However, some argue that curfew restricts personal freedom and punishes responsible teenagers. This criticism has some validity; many young people are responsible and do not engage in any antisocial behaviour. For example, sometimes teenagers are helping their parents by doing extra hours at their job.
In conclusion, curfew is important for teenagers because of safety and their education, but sometimes they feel like rules are snatching their freedom. I believe that the government should make rules which are balanced for responsible people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt by clearly stating your opinion and providing supporting reasons. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas regarding safety and academic performance are relevant and well-supported. However, the development of these ideas could be more sophisticated. For instance, when discussing the 'bad people' or 'crime', the explanation is somewhat general. To reach a higher band, try to provide more nuanced examples or deeper analysis of the societal implications of curfews. Overall, you have successfully fulfilled the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organised, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as safety or education, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use cohesive devices like 'The fundamental reason is', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to link your ideas effectively. While the progression is clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always smooth and natural. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'vulnerable to committing crimes' and 'antisocial behaviour' are used correctly. However, there is a reliance on somewhat basic vocabulary, such as 'bad people' or 'staying outside for so long'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more precise, academic collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'bad people', you could use 'delinquent elements' or 'criminal influences'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the text, and your word choices do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'Adequate sleep is essential for mental health, concentration and academic performance.' While there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'an adult is required with them for guidance and to oversee them to reach home safely' (which is slightly awkward in phrasing), these errors do not impede meaning. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, with greater precision to demonstrate higher control.
