Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding teenage curfews, but the ideas are frequently unclear and under-developed. While the writer mentions reasons for curfews such as 'robbery' and 'protest', the arguments are disjointed and lack logical progression. The position is not consistently maintained throughout the essay, and the connection between the examples provided and the topic of teenage curfews is often tenuous. The response lacks a clear, cohesive argument, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's stance on whether these curfews are beneficial or not. More focus on explaining the impact of curfews on teenagers specifically would improve the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is weak. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion', but they are often used incorrectly or in a way that does not logically connect the ideas. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. There is a lack of clear progression of ideas, and the referencing is often confusing, making the text difficult to follow. The use of linking words is mechanical and sometimes inappropriate for the context, which hinders the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and often inaccurate. The writer uses words like 'phenomenally' and 'turbulence' in ways that do not fit the context, and there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'take government strike actions' and 'protected our child bihalf police'. These errors occasionally impede communication, as the reader must guess the intended meaning. There is little evidence of an attempt to use less common lexical items effectively. To improve, the student should focus on learning collocations and using words that are appropriate for a formal essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, sentence structure, and word order. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'There are take government strike actions during those type of challenges faced curfew.' There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the simple sentences used often contain errors that make the meaning unclear. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and incorrect capitalization. These frequent errors significantly impact the readability of the text and demonstrate a limited control over basic grammatical structures.
