Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some parts of the US, a curfew is imposed on adolescents, that do not permit them to be outdoors after a particular time period at night without accompanied by an adult. In my opinion, this practice is essential as it not only ensure safety for them but also minimise crime rates in society.

One of the main reasons is that safety is of paramount importance for the well-being of teenagers. This is largely because of growing illegal activities in society. To exemplify, in Kansas, many high-school students commit crimes especially at night, which is the main reason to impose such regulation. Although going out with adults does not completely hinder offences in neighbourhood, it is a far more better practice than teenagers leaving home alone after particular time. Consequently, it is apparent that implementing curfew in some areas of the USA ensures restrictions and overall safety of teenagers.

Another significant factor is that enforcing curfew could curb serious criminal rates. This is mainly due to the fact that teenagers that are often accompanied by an adult are less likely to experience any potential harm. A case in point is that in California, after introducing curfew, a large number of adolescents who accompanies an adult at night feels more safe in society than it used to be. If adults take full responsibility of adolescents, there are high chance of reducing crime frequency among them. As a result, a curfew is crucial to hinder crime records in society.

In conclusion, a curfew is implemented in some areas of the US which restricts teenagers to go outdoors be themselves after a specific time at night, unless accompanied by an adult. From my perspective, this is mainly to promote safety, secure environment and curb potential offence rates.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an opinion in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on safety and crime reduction. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument about 'safety' is repeated in both body paragraphs without significant new depth. While the position is clear, the supporting examples, such as the mention of Kansas and California, are somewhat generic and could be more effectively integrated to strengthen the argument. Overall, the response is well-focused, but could benefit from more nuanced exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To exemplify', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, there is some mechanical use of these devices, and the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly stilted. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'paramount importance', 'curb serious criminal rates', and 'potential harm'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'a far more better practice' (should be 'far better') and 'hinder crime records' (which is not a standard collocation). There is also some repetition of basic vocabulary. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and avoid redundant phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('teenagers that are often accompanied... are less likely', 'adolescents who accompanies'), incorrect preposition usage ('without accompanied by'), and awkward phrasing ('restricts teenagers to go outdoors be themselves'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
