Student answer (Band 6.5)

Imprisoning teenagers in their home at night and restricting their movement unless accompanied by an adult is a very serious and delicate matter.

With the increase in crime rates in recent times and the easy availability of drugs and other banned substances government had to take necessary steps before situation gets any worse. While, I believe the steps taken were necessary but also a bit harsh as well. Studies have proven that restricting someone to not do something only makes them more vulnerable and eager to try that thing. Firstly, In place of a curfew, government could increase more police patrolling in the area and take harsh action against the criminals. Secondly, a strict crackdown on drug dealers is necessary to curb the flow of drugs into the community and harsh sentences without bail should be introduced for person who take part in such activities. Lastly, at risk teenagers should be identified and support programs should be introduced to help them and refrain them from taking part in illicit activities. Moreover, imposing curfew on teenagers also violates their constitutional rights which can open government to future lawsuits.

Furthermore, i believe that schools, parents and community in general needs to teach the children about the current crime organizations and their way of operating and how to avoid getting into various crime syndicate. Educational classes should be introduced which teaches teenagers about the harmful effects of banned drugs that are being sold and its addiction can destroy their future.

According to me, in place of curfew various other steps can be taken to improve the current situation faced by the community.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt by providing a clear opinion on the curfew issue. You present a balanced view, acknowledging the government's perspective while arguing against the curfew in favor of alternative solutions like increased patrolling and educational programs. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, the claim that 'restricting someone... makes them more vulnerable' is a strong point that could have been supported with a more specific example or elaboration. Overall, you have successfully maintained a consistent position throughout the essay, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your arguments. While the progression of ideas is clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. To reach a higher band, ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and that you vary your cohesive devices to avoid a list-like structure in your body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illicit activities', 'crime syndicate', and 'constitutional rights' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'restricting someone to not do something' (which is slightly awkward) and 'person who take part' (should be plural 'people'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and more precise academic terminology would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('government had to take', 'community needs to teach', 'person who take part') and missing articles ('in place of curfew'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with pluralization and article usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater precision.
