Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0
The response fails to address the prompt entirely. The task asks for an opinion on teenage curfews, but the essay discusses the impact of internet and smartphone usage. Because the response is completely off-topic and also fails the minimum word count requirement (207 words instead of 250), it cannot be awarded a passing score for task achievement. The ideas presented are irrelevant to the specific question posed, and the failure to meet the length requirement further impacts the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks logical progression. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the ideas within the paragraphs are disjointed and often confusing. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the abrupt transition 'In the words' and the misuse of 'Although' at the start of a sentence. The lack of a clear central theme makes it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's argument, resulting in a fragmented structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and often inaccurate. There is significant repetition of basic words like 'people', 'internet', and 'phone'. Phrases such as 'content talk' and 'how to business running' are non-standard and impede clarity. The student struggles to use appropriate collocations, and the lack of variety in word choice prevents the expression of more complex ideas. The vocabulary is generally restricted to a very basic level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often obscure meaning. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'increasing number of people are using'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'This is happening because of growing, which is offered by internet and mobiles.' The lack of control over basic sentence construction and the high frequency of errors make the text difficult to read and understand.
