Student answer (Band 6.0)

Allowing teenagers to stay outside of their residences without any accompanying adult for a particular period of time during night might cause serious consequences. This may lead to an increasing chance of illegal activities as well as their security concerns. Therefore, in my opinion, the 'curfew' imposed in some regions of the USA seems to be appropriate, even though there should be some exceptions.

First of all, there is a natural tendency for the teenagers to spend time during night with their friends and roam around the city which might encourage them to get involved with illegal activities. Some examples we have already noticed in other countries such as South Africa and Bolivia. The rate of vandalism and small crimes has increased substantially over the past few years. To find the root, most of these crimes were committed by the teenagers since they had been allowed to freely roam around with any supervision by an accompanying adult. Keeping in this mind, the 'curfew' imposed by the US government to restrict the night activities of the teenagers proves to be a good decision.

Furthermore, if these teenagers are allowed to stay out of doors after a particular time during night, specially without an accompanying adult, this may pose a threat to their security. We see this as an example of the recent incident happened in New York where a small non accompanying girl was severely beaten and robbed by a group of adults, leads to her death after a few days. It is therefore essential to limit their activities after a particular time at night in order to ensure their security.

However, there may be some exceptional cases where a teenager might require to go outside unnoticed. For instance, to seek for medical assistances or other life emergencies, which are fully understandable. In such cases, local security forces may come forward by providing required assistances.

Overall, although there may have some exceptional situations where a teenager needs to stay out of the doors, they should not be left unnoticed after a particular period of time at night in order to limit any illegal activities and address their security. Hence, the 'curfew' imposed by the US authority seems to be a correct decision for the overall well-being of the teenagers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the mention of vandalism in other countries and the specific incident in New York. You have addressed all parts of the prompt, including the need for exceptions. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more closely linked to the specific context of the US curfew, as the jump to South Africa and Bolivia feels slightly disconnected from the primary focus on the US. Overall, the development of your argument is logical and consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First of all,' 'Furthermore,' and 'However' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct points. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For instance, 'Keeping in this mind' is a minor error in collocation that slightly disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used with more natural precision would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to express your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'illegal activities,' 'security concerns,' and 'life emergencies' are used appropriately. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'seek for medical assistances' (should be 'seek medical assistance') and 'small non accompanying girl' (should be 'unaccompanied minor'). To improve, focus on learning common collocations and the correct usage of uncountable nouns. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated or precise synonyms would help you move into a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive feature. However, there are recurring grammatical errors that occasionally affect the precision of your writing. For example, 'there may have some exceptional situations' should be 'there may be some exceptional situations,' and 'leads to her death' should be 'which led to her death.' Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and pluralization, such as 'with any supervision.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and relative clauses will help improve your accuracy.
