Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many places in the U.S have imposed curfew which restricts teenagers from going out of their home at night after a particular time. I completely agree with this view as it protects children and makes them disciplined and responsible.

To begin with, curfews can protect kids from dangerous situations late at night. Many unforeseen incidents usually occur when its dark and there is nobody present outside on the roads, malls, shops etc. young people lack knowledge and experience and when such situation comes up they tend to be afraid and vulnerable. For example, nowadays many road accidents take place due to consuming alcohol and when teenagers are on streets with their friends they are not aware of the consequences of what will happen. Restraining them to stay indoors after a certain time can prevent such situations from happening and can keep them safe.

Secondly, if juveniles obey few rules and regulations they start to become responsible and disciplined from an early stage. Making them understand what is good and bad, what should be done and what shouldn’t, etc makes them aware of the environment they are surrounded with. Teenagers are always curious to explore and learn different things but limiting it is also crucial so that they may not fall into wrong habits. For instance, if a young child is taught how to behave respectfully in front of elders he will never disrespect any elderly person in the future. Building a sense of respect and making him considerable towards others.

In conclusion, curfews can play a positive role in keeping young people safe and secure also teaching them how to take accountability and behave appropriately when needed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on safety and discipline. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'discipline' is a bit generic and could have been strengthened with more specific examples of how a curfew translates into long-term behavioral changes. The example regarding road accidents is relevant, but the connection between the curfew and the specific behavior of teenagers is slightly over-generalized. Overall, the response is well-focused, but further elaboration on the counter-arguments or more nuanced examples would elevate the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between sentences within paragraphs can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. For example, the link between the idea of 'curiosity' and 'respecting elders' in the second paragraph is slightly abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be more smoothly connected to improve the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinions clearly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'unforeseen incidents', 'vulnerable', and 'accountability'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'making him considerable towards others' (should be 'considerate') and 'restraining them to stay indoors' (should be 'restricting them to staying indoors'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Many places in the U.S have imposed curfew' (missing article 'a'), 'when its dark' (should be 'it's'), and 'obey few rules' (should be 'a few rules'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with comma usage. While the errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the message. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and possessive pronouns.
