Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some parts of the United states, teenagers are required to stay indoors after a certain time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. I partially agree with this policy because it can improve the teenager's safety and reduce their involvement in criminal activities. However, it may also limit the freedom of responsible teenagers would lose freedom and affect their studies and social lifestyle.

On the one hand, curfews can improve teenager's safety. Teenagers are less likely to be influenced by people involved in criminal activities such as drug use and robbery. As a result, they are less likely to get involved in crime themselves, which can protect them from negative influencer. For example, a teenager who has to be home by 10 p.m may not visit to places like pubs or other party places where the use of drug is common, reducing their exposure to criminal activity.

On the other hand, curfew limit the freedom of responsible teenagers. Curfews can restrict teenagers freedom by forcing them to return home at a fixed time, which can limit their physical activity and social interaction. As a result, teenagers may become less socially active and have fewer opportunities to participate in activities with their friends. This may affect their social development and ability to maintain an active lifestyle. For example, A teenager who is required to return home early may participate less in sports and affect their social life.

In conclusion, I partially agree that curfew can improve teenagers safety, although they may also limit the freedom and social activities of responsible teenagers . However, I believe that these restrictions can be justified when they help protect young people from negative influences and criminal activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided a balanced view, acknowledging both the safety benefits and the potential drawbacks regarding personal freedom. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, although some points, such as the impact on social development, could have been supported with more specific, nuanced examples. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully extended; for instance, you could elaborate on how specific types of 'responsible' activities are hindered by these laws to provide a more comprehensive analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You have used cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'As a result' to guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that referencing is always precise. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the safety argument and the example could be smoother to enhance the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'criminal activities,' 'social interaction,' and 'negative influences' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'visit to places' (should be 'visit places') and 'negative influencer' (should be 'negative influences'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise academic vocabulary. For example, instead of 'improve safety,' you could use 'enhance public safety' or 'mitigate risks.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'curfew limit' (should be 'curfews limit'), 'teenager's safety' (should be 'teenagers' safety'), and 'use of drug' (should be 'use of drugs'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalization issues, such as 'A teenager' in the middle of a sentence. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and pluralization. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move toward a higher band score.
