Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is becoming increasingly common for some areas in the United States to impose curfews on teenagers, meaning that they cannot go outside after a certain time unless they are accompanied by an adult. In my opinion, I believe that this rule has more benefits because it can improve teenagers' safety and encourage parents to have better control over their children's activities.

On the one hand, curfews can protect teenagers from dangerous situations that may occur late at night. Young people may not always be able to judge whether a particular situation is safe, especially when they are with friends and without adult supervision. By requiring teenagers to return home at a certain time, parents can have more control over where their children are and reduce their exposure to possible crimes or accidents. For example, a teenager who is required to be home before 11 p.m. may be less likely to spend several hours outside in an area where crime is common.

On the other hand, some people believe that teenagers should have more freedom because they need to become independent as they grow older. Very strict curfews could prevent young people from attending evening activities or spending time with their friends. However, I believe that this problem can be avoided if parents and authorities introduce reasonable curfew times. For instance, teenagers could be allowed to stay outside until 10 or 11 p.m. on weekends while having an earlier curfew on school nights.

In conclusion, although curfews can restrict teenagers' freedom to some extent, I believe that they are beneficial because they can protect young people and help parents establish appropriate boundaries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses the prompt by clearly stating an opinion and providing supporting arguments for both sides of the issue. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the point regarding safety and the counter-argument about independence. The response is balanced and addresses the prompt's requirement to give reasons and examples. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while reinforcing the initial stance. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, real-world examples or delve deeper into the sociological implications of such policies.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the relationship between ideas is clear. The flow is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive usage of linking words. The structure is sound and supports the overall argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'impose curfews', 'adult supervision', 'exposure to possible crimes', and 'establish appropriate boundaries'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys meaning clearly, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or idiomatic flair that would characterize a band 8 or 9. The word choices are functional and precise enough to avoid ambiguity, but they remain somewhat standard. There are no significant errors in collocation or spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good command of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('if parents and authorities introduce...') and relative clauses ('...who is required to be home...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the grammar is accurate, the range of structures is somewhat limited to standard patterns. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, contributing to the overall readability of the essay.
