Student answer (Band 8.0)
In some parts of the United States, adolescents are restricted from going outdoors at late night, unless they are supervised by grown-ups. This is widely seen in other developing countries as well where parents are worried about their children's safety. In my opinion, although teenagers should be given full freedom, some restrictions are justified.
The primary catalyst behind this phenomenon is the escalating rate of crime which may create formidable situations for children. This is because with rapidly rising incidents of child abduction, rape, extortion and murder, it is justified for families and officials to stay vigilant. Teenagers are immature and might not be able to escape from such vulnerable situations by themselves, thus it is better to avoid unnecessary late nights for their safety.
Another contributing factor is that parents want to safeguard their children by preventing them from getting into wrong company. It is wise to prevent them from going to nightclubs and avoiding the company of friends who abuse drugs and alcohol. For instance, it is widely seen that notorious drug dealers supply banned drugs to youth in the nightclubs. Therefore, if we restrict youth from going there at night, we can prevent them from falling prey to such predators. Furthermore, this trend ensures teenagers get good 8-10 hours of sleep which is critical for their physical and intellectual development. While it helps them to rest and recover, it also allows them to get up early in the morning and do sports or study as per their interests.
To sum up, in my view restricting teenagers from getting out at night helps protect them from late-night safety risks, prevents exposure to peer pressure regarding drugs and alcohol, and ensures they get adequate sleep which assists in their physical and mental development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that supports the implementation of curfews. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the arguments regarding crime prevention and the health benefits of sleep. The essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced counter-arguments or explore the potential downsides of such restrictions to demonstrate a more balanced, critical perspective, which is often expected in high-scoring responses.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as crime prevention or health benefits. Cohesive devices like 'The primary catalyst,' 'Another contributing factor,' and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the safety argument and the health argument is handled well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The vocabulary is generally precise and appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'escalating rate of crime,' 'formidable situations,' and 'falling prey to such predators' demonstrate a good range of vocabulary. There is an awareness of collocation, and the language used is natural. While the vocabulary is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions could elevate the response further. The spelling and word choice are accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The student demonstrates a good command of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('if we restrict youth... we can prevent') and concessive clauses ('although teenagers should be given...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, reflecting a high level of grammatical accuracy.
