Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the United States of America, the safety of children is a concerning topic. Some areas have imposed a curfew and teenagers are only allowed to leave their homes after a specific time if an adult joins them. I believe there could be several reasons behind this approach which I would discuss in the following paragraphs.

The main reason is teenagers' safety. Parents are concerned about how unsafe it is for teenagers to stay outdoors late at night. It is important to protect them from injuries, crime or other mishaps. Also, keeping them under the supervision of an adult when they leave the house at night would teach them discipline. They will follow the rule of coming back home on time after school or from the playground. Further, they will adopt an organized schedule and it would help to develop their good habits of time management.

Another reason is to prevent teenagers from developing bad habits. Teenagers can be easily influenced to engage in activities such as drugs, fighting, vandalism, and drinking when they stay late at night. A curfew can discourage it. Moreover, applying such restrictions develops a sense of responsibility which could be helpful in their future development as shaping their personality and perception from such an age is important to make them sensible about acts.

Overall, accompaniment from an adult or restriction of hours for nighttime activities are necessary to shape the personal and social development of a teenager as they can easily come under the influence of someone. However, intense restriction can impact their independence, so wise knowledge and awareness about what is wrong or what is right should be given by the parents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for the curfew, such as safety and the prevention of negative influences. The ideas are extended with supporting explanations, such as the link between curfews and time management or personality development. However, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, the argument about 'discipline' is a bit repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more specific or detailed to fully flesh out the implications of your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'The main reason', 'Also', 'Moreover', and 'However' to guide the reader. While the progression is clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the link between 'developing bad habits' and 'sense of responsibility' in the third paragraph could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the flow of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'supervision', 'vandalism', and 'social development'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'wise knowledge' (better: 'sound judgment' or 'guidance') and 'shaping their personality... from such an age' (better: 'at such a young age'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of collocations and idiomatic expressions would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and errors in grammar and punctuation are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, 'I would discuss' should ideally be 'I will discuss' to match the present tense of the essay. There is a slight awkwardness in 'as shaping their personality... is important to make them sensible about acts', which is a bit clunky. Overall, your control of grammar is good, but you should aim for more varied complex structures to demonstrate greater flexibility.
