Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some parts of the United States, teenagers are not allowed to roam outside their house during curfew time until or unless they are accompanied by their parents. I believe it is a wise decision to protect teenagers and to improve public safety.

One major reason is that teenagers are more vulnerable than adults to various risks, such as peer pressure, criminal activity and becoming victim of crime. By implementing a curfew, authorities can help mitigate these risks by ensuring that young people are less exposed to potential dangers during late night hours. For example, statics shows that teenagers are more likely to involve in such crimes during night hours because of inexperience, peer pressure to engage in risk activities.

Furthermore, another major reason is public safety. To elaborate more, by implementing curfew on teenagers directly increase the safety of the young children. If children stay at home during late night hours, the criminal activities will automatically decrease, and authorities could eliminate those risks from the society and create safe environment not only for teenagers but also for the adults. Additionally, it also provides an opportunity to children to spend quality time with their parents. They can share their up and down of the daily life and parents can provide realistic solution to their children so that they can achieve good results and focus more on career. For instance, recent article published in United States newspaper that government has reduced criminal activities by 90%, and it has seen that parents has played an important role in it by protecting their children and teaching good moral values.

In conclusion, while curfew may seem restrictive, they are a reasonable and effective way to protect children from criminal activities during night hours. By requiring them to be accompanied by adults, curfew not only safeguard young people but also contribute to the overall safety of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for your opinion, such as the protection of teenagers and the reduction of criminal activity. The ideas are generally well-developed, though some arguments, such as the claim that curfews provide an opportunity for quality time with parents, feel slightly tangential to the core issue of public safety. The example regarding the 90% reduction in crime is a bit vague and lacks specific context, but it serves to support your argument. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the link between the curfew and 'spending quality time with parents' is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, and the referencing is generally clear, ensuring that the reader can follow your line of reasoning without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'vulnerable', 'mitigate', 'eliminate', and 'safeguard'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'statics shows' (should be 'statistics show') and 'involve in such crimes' (should be 'involved in such crimes'). You attempt to use more sophisticated language, which is positive, but there is room for more precise and varied vocabulary to reach a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully convey your ideas, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'parents has played' (subject-verb agreement), 'by implementing curfew on teenagers directly increase' (incorrect verb form), and 'it has seen that' (passive voice error). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band score.
