Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some parts of the United States, teenagers are not allowed to go outside after a certain time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. I believe this restriction is helpful because it makes a safer environment for the teens and also beneficial for there mental and physical health, but night curfew should have some exceptions.

To begin with, staying indoors after a specific time at night secure teenagers from drunk drivers, violence, and other criminal activities. These activities are dangerous and leave a lasting impact on adolescents. Thus, staying inside is beneficial for their mental well being. Curfews can also discourages teenagers to participate in vandalism and other non ethical activities. Moreover, teenagers need proper sleep so that they can focus on study properly and if they have to return home at a particular time. They might be able to get a proper sleep which is beneficial for both their mind and body.

However, curfews should be flexible because there are a number of teenagers working part-time or have to stay outside due to some reasons such as coming back from party, school event, or an emergency situation. In these circumstances they should be allowed to leave their house without an adult at night. For example, a student, who finishes their work at 11 p.m. should be allowed to travel alone. Therefore, rules should have some exceptions so that people do not feel caged.

In conclusion, although curfews are beneficial in terms of securing teenagers from criminal activities and giving students proper time to rejuvenate. It should be flexible enough to make necessary changes whenever required.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, providing a clear opinion on the curfew policy. You present a balanced view, acknowledging the benefits of safety and health while arguing for necessary flexibility. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the mention of part-time work and emergency situations as exceptions. However, some points could be extended further; for instance, the link between curfews and 'mental well-being' is mentioned but not fully explained. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, and the arguments are logically supported, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to link your points effectively. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is mostly clear, though the sentence structure in the second paragraph regarding sleep could be improved for better cohesion. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'vandalism', 'rejuvenate', and 'circumstances' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'non ethical activities' (unethical) and 'there mental' (their). Additionally, 'discourages teenagers to participate' is slightly unnatural; 'discourages teenagers from participating' would be more accurate. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, these occasional inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you show control over basic grammar, there are several persistent errors. For example, 'night curfew should have' (a night curfew), 'focus on study' (focus on their studies), and 'if they have to return home at a particular time. They might be able to...' (this is a sentence fragment). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips that occur throughout the text. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammatical control is sufficient for a Band 6.0.
