Student answer (Band 6.5)
In certain locations in the United States, teenagers are given a curfew which prevents them from being outdoors at a certain time at night, unless in the company of an adult. I believe this is a good step. This essay will discuss the reasons.
Teenagers having a curfew enhances safety. Nighttime is a period when most dangerous acts happen. A curfew will keep the teenagers safe from robbery, kidnapping or even murder. A number of crimes in the society especially in the United States, happen at night. This is due to reduced human activity and the darkness. When teenagers go out alone at night, they are prone to all sorts of crimes. These crimes have traumatic experiences for the ones who make it out alive. For instance, the press has shown a good number of female teenagers getting raped during odd hours at night. Imposing a curfew will help curtail this dangerous act and keep the teenager safe.
Furthermore, imposing a curfew gives teenagers a sense of responsibility. Parents have an important role in ensuring teenagers have the right values. Imposing a curfew on teenagers breed responsibility and limit vices. Research has shown that a good number of crimes in the society is caused by group of teenagers. Giving them a curfew and attaching suitable penalty for offenders, will help reduce the crime rate. For example, cult groups mostly comprise of teenagers without values. Having a curfew on ground will help limit the activities of these cult groups.
In conclusion, imposing a curfew on teenagers is very essential It ensures their safety and gives them a sense of responsibility.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding safety and responsibility are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of crime rates and cult groups. However, the development is somewhat limited; the ideas are presented in a straightforward manner without deep exploration. For instance, the link between curfews and 'cult groups' is asserted but not fully explained. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more nuanced analysis or counter-arguments to demonstrate a more sophisticated engagement with the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied. For example, the transition between the safety argument and the responsibility argument is functional but could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'curtail', 'imposing', and 'vices' appropriately. There are some instances where word choice could be more precise or natural, such as 'dangerous acts' instead of 'criminal activities' or 'on ground' instead of 'in place'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, there is a lack of less common or idiomatic expressions that would elevate the writing to a higher band. Focusing on collocations and more academic synonyms will help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'These crimes have traumatic experiences' (should be 'cause' or 'result in') and 'a group of teenagers' (should be 'groups'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in the society' (should be 'in society'). The control of grammar is generally good, and these errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where error-free complex sentences are more frequent.
