Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often noticed that a curfew is implemented in some cities in the United States, which does not allow teenagers to go outside without being accompanied by someone after a specific time at night. In this essay, I will discuss my opinion in the following paragraphs on why a curfew is good.
One of the main advantages of a curfew is that the crime rate is increasing at an alarming rate. When teenagers are not allowed to go outside at night, it is safer for them. It is often observed that the majority of crimes happen late at night. With the help of a curfew, parents can protect their children from mishaps. For example, in New York City, USA, where under 18s are not allowed to go outside from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Hence, young people can stay away from criminal activities.
In addition, a curfew also has another benefit that cannot be overlooked. Having a curfew in cities for teenagers, it also encourages them to go home on time rather than staying outside till late at night. They can not only spend quality time with their family but also get enough sleep, which is crucial for their mental health; however, a curfew also has one drawback: teenagers may be afraid to go outside when they become adults, as they used to go outside with their parents. For instance, after 18, individuals in developed nations start working; sometimes they have shifts till mid-nights. Therefore, they may be afraid on the road when they are walking alone at midnight.
In conclusion, although a curfew does not allow individuals to become independent in their lives, in my perspective, teenagers can stay away from crime, feel safe at home and spend some time with family.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding safety and family time are relevant and supported by examples, such as the reference to New York City. However, the development of the counter-argument regarding the long-term impact on independence is somewhat underdeveloped and slightly confusing in its logic. While the position is clear, the essay could benefit from a more nuanced exploration of the trade-off between safety and personal freedom to reach a higher band. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, the transition between the benefits and the drawback in the second body paragraph is slightly abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly to improve the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'alarming rate', 'quality time', and 'criminal activities'. However, there is some repetition of basic vocabulary, and some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'mishaps' to describe crime or 'afraid on the road'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to social policy or adolescent development. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Having a curfew... it also encourages', which is a dangling modifier, and 'they used to go outside with their parents', which does not quite capture the intended meaning of being restricted. Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentence boundaries could be refined. While the errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence constructions.
