Student answer (Band 6.0)

A curfew is started in some areas of the US, due to that young people cannot go out during night time without a company of adult with them. While protection is necessary for teenagers specially late night, but its unfair with them who is working in night shifts. In my view, rules should be same for every age group so that nobody have to worry about work at night time, when everything stay closed.

One reason for making restriction for only teenagers is safety. Young individuals are not very much aware about the condition why a curfew imposed and how they should react in these circumstances. Therefore, their parents or any other adult should give a company to them after a particular time at night. As a result they will feel safe and secure and do their important work for they need to step out from home late night.

However, making a rule for only young generation is not fare for them many ways. Firstly, the teenagers who do not have a company of any adult cannot go for work during night time, which will effect their daily life things specially related to earning money for basic needs. Secondly, adults will have more options to work for day and night shifts, which is totally discrimination regarding age. Lastly, It would be extra work for parents, they cannot stay relaxed at home. For example, they are already working day time and night time they need to go with their child. Thus, there is no time for them to relax and sleep well.

In conclusion, although safety is an important factor for teenagers, but freedom and working opportunities should be same for all age groups. A more reasonable approach is that in a curfew everything should be closed during night time, so that everyone stay safe and relaxed at home. Also, employers should give equal chance of work in these type of conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by providing an opinion on teenage curfews. You present a clear position, arguing that while safety is important, such rules can be discriminatory and burdensome. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'night shifts' for teenagers is a relevant point, but it is not fully explored in terms of the broader societal impact. The conclusion introduces a new idea—that everything should be closed at night—which is a slight shift from the focus on teenage curfews. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported with more detailed explanation or specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' 'Lastly,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as in the opening paragraph where the transition between the curfew description and your opinion is abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences lack smooth connectivity, which affects the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'do not have a company' instead of 'are not accompanied' and 'daily life things' instead of 'daily activities.' There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'its unfair with them' (should be 'it is unfair to them') and 'discrimination regarding age' (should be 'age discrimination'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary limits the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('rules should be same', 'nobody have to worry'), article usage ('a curfew is started'), and awkward phrasing ('due to that young people cannot go out'). While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors, such as 'the teenagers who do not have a company of any adult cannot go for work'. These errors are noticeable throughout the text, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points.
