Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some parts of the United States, teenagers are prohibited from being outdoors after a certain time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult. This essay will elucidate my opinion and give a reason with example in subsequent paragraph.

To commence with, one major advanatge of a teenage curfew is that it can improve young poeple's safety. To expand, at night, teenagers may be more vulerable to accidents, violence, theft or other dangerous situations, particularly when they are travelling alone. For example, if teenagers are required to return home by 10 to 11 p.m., parents can have greater peace of mind knowing that their children are safe rather than spending the night outside without supervision.

To solidify another benefit, the curfew may discourage young people from becoming involved in anti-social behaviou. Groups of unsupervised teenagers gathering late at night can sometimes lead to vandalism or fighting. By limiting the number of young people on the streets during late-night hours, local authorities may be able to prevent some of these probelms and make neighbourhoods safer for residents.

However, I do not think tht curfews should be excessively strict. Teenagers should gradually develop independence and learn to make responsible decisions for themselves. There may also be legitimate reasons for them to be outside after the designated time, such as attending a late school event, returning from a part-time job or travelling home with friends,

In conclusion, I strongly support reasonable curfews for teenagers because they can protect young people and reduce anti-social behaviour. Nevertheless, such rules should be flexible rather than overly restrictive, allowing respomsible teenagers to travel for legitimate reasons.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear opinion and supporting it with relevant reasons and examples. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the arguments regarding safety and the prevention of anti-social behaviour. The conclusion effectively summarises the main points while adding a nuanced perspective about flexibility. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific real-world examples or elaborate further on the counter-arguments to demonstrate a deeper level of critical thinking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits of curfews and the need for flexibility is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'To solidify another benefit', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately. While the flow is generally good, some of the linking phrases are slightly formulaic; incorporating a wider variety of cohesive devices would improve the overall sophistication of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses relevant topic-specific terms like 'prohibited', 'vulnerable', 'supervision', and 'anti-social behaviour'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'advanatge', 'poeple', 'vulerable', 'behaviou', and 'probelms'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading to eliminate these minor slips and attempt to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, such as 'Groups of unsupervised teenagers gathering late at night can sometimes lead to vandalism or fighting.' There are some minor punctuation and typographical errors, such as the missing 't' in 'tht' and the comma splice at the end of the third paragraph. While the control of grammar is generally good, the presence of these slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent proofreading would enhance the score.
