Student answer (Band 5.0)

In certain regions of united states youngsters are restricted to go out after midnight unless they are with adults. In this essay, I will explain some reasons with examples,

I think this is the good start to save teenagers from thiefs and terror but this is not the perfect way to find the cause of problem. In addition, if there is curfew for some period that’s okay to take time to find actual reason to find what is going inside nation but because of this restriction youngsters may feel left out and started drinking, drugs and more. However, curfew does not solve the problem of crime rates but if there will be good parading and government should also encourage people in community engagement. Rather than giving curfew people should have knowledge about how to tackle crime situation and have weapons like paper spray.

On the other hand, I do believe that teenagers are easy targets to steal something or assault in the darkness. Moreover, in countries where crime rates are high it is beneficial to give curfew for everyone’s safety if they are at home after it gets dark crime will get reduced. Moreover, if there any infection spreading in country we should follow the regulations such as at Covid time everyone had to live at home for around a year because of the rapid expansion of the infection.

In conclusion, while curfew has few advantages but I believe if government will find the root cause of this rather that conduct curfew.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by providing an opinion on curfews. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. While you mention safety and crime, the argument lacks depth and clarity. For instance, the transition to discussing Covid-19 is not clearly linked to the topic of teenage curfews, making the argument feel tangential. The position is stated but not fully supported with logical reasoning; the suggestion of 'paper spray' is not a standard or appropriate solution to discuss in this context. To improve, ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-explained point that directly supports your main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical flow between sentences is often weak. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'On the other hand', but they are sometimes used incorrectly or do not effectively connect the ideas. The progression of arguments is disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the jump from crime to drug use and then to community engagement feels abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each sentence logically follows the previous one would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'thiefs' (should be 'thieves'), 'good parading' (likely meaning 'policing'), and 'paper spray' (should be 'pepper spray'). You rely on basic vocabulary, which restricts your ability to express complex ideas clearly. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise terminology related to the topic, such as 'juvenile delinquency', 'public safety measures', or 'societal implications', and ensure you are using words in their correct collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. Issues include missing articles ('in united states'), incorrect verb forms ('started drinking' instead of 'start drinking'), and run-on sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar—such as subject-verb agreement and preposition usage—prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic errors and practicing complex sentence construction will help.
