Student answer (Band 6.5)
American government has been making many changes to the law. The introduction of a curfew is one of them, and I believe that this was required for the children's safety. I totally support imposing a curfew at night because of the increasing rate of crime.
The American gun culture has made it really hard for people to live in peace. Every other day, news reports are heard about shootings in America. Most crimes take place at night to avoid the sighting of police. To keep the children safe, the prohibited time at night really helps the parents. This curfew would stop the kids from leaving their homes at night and keep them from being a target of these crimes while they are alone. One of the horrifying incidents took place in Rockford, where a teen was minding his own business and was buying snacks at a seven eleven at midnight. Unfortunately, due to misconduct by another customer with a cashier, the shooting started, and that teen was killed in that shooting.
Additionally, the NYPD has investigated that 70% of the teens are involved in drug dealing. As stated before, the dealers use the cover of midnight to avoid being targeted by police, as it is easier for them to hide or run away at night. This curfew on teens at night is going to play a vital role in bringing this percentage down. If they are with their parents or guardians, they would not be involved in these crimes.
One of my friends was allegedly arrested by police because he just went to the guys in a car which was in the parking lot of a Walmart. He was being called by them towards the car. They were the drug dealers.
Overall, this curfew is going to positively affect society by bringing down the crime rates in certain parts of the U.S. As teens are the most vulnerable targets of these people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have clearly stated your position in favor of the curfew and maintained it throughout the essay. You provided relevant reasons, such as the prevalence of gun violence and the involvement of teenagers in drug-related activities. The examples provided, such as the incident in Rockford and the anecdote about your friend, help to illustrate your points. However, the development of these ideas could be more balanced; for instance, the discussion on drug dealing could be more analytical rather than relying on a personal anecdote. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'As stated before' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the anecdote about your friend and the broader argument could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. To reach a higher band, ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and that referencing is consistently clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'misconduct', 'vulnerable', and 'prohibited time'. There are some instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'sighting of police' (which should be 'detection by police') or 'went to the guys' (which is informal). While you successfully convey your meaning, the range is somewhat limited, and you rely on some repetitive phrasing. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations and academic vocabulary would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'news reports are heard' (passive voice usage is slightly awkward here) and 'he just went to the guys in a car' (informal phrasing). There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence variety and refining your control over complex structures will help improve your accuracy.
