Student answer (Band 6.0)

Curfew' is considered as a state of emergency and imposed in situations like wars, protests, and natural or man-made disasters. Curfew has certain conditions like teenagers are not allowed outside their residences during the particular time especially the night without their guardians. I completely agree with this condition, because this is implemented for their safety and well-being.

To commence with, going outside alone at night in situations like wars, riots, and disasters could be dangerous for the young individuals, as they do not have any experience of dealing with such challenging conditions. Likewise, teenagers are often influenced by movies and series, so they can act irresponsibly in disasters such as floods, earthquakes and cyclones. For instance, in India, a group of student left their hostel at night during the Bhopal gas-leak tradegy and ended up in a hospital because of difficulty in breathing. Consequently, the government has announced strict measures during curfews in order to prevent such incidents and increase safety of public.

Moreover, not only teenagers but also their guardians or parents should avoid going out of their homes in restricted hours unless there is a medical emergency. Since people are highly disappointed and aggresive during protests, going out might be problematic for adults as well. If there is a severe medical emergency and ambulance is not available, individuals should inform their local police before heading towards the hospital for treatment. This can alert the police force or sometimes they may come to assist you on the way to hospital.

To sum up, such laws are made for the safety of society. Teenagers should completely avoid going out in restrictive conditions with their parents. Even though, guardians should keep themselve extra alert and avoid stepping outside their residences unless medical assistance is required for someone.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear opinion on the curfew policy. However, the essay conflates the specific prompt regarding teenage curfews in the US with general emergency situations like 'wars' and 'natural disasters.' While the student attempts to support their position with an example, the focus shifts away from the social policy of teenage curfews toward general emergency management. To improve, the response should remain more strictly focused on the social implications of teenage curfews rather than broad disaster management, ensuring the arguments are more directly relevant to the specific context provided in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'Moreover,' and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the logical progression between the idea of teenage curfews and the broader discussion of emergency disaster protocols is somewhat disjointed. The referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task, providing a coherent structure that is easy to follow despite the slight shift in topic focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'residences,' 'irresponsibly,' and 'restrictive conditions.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor collocation errors, such as 'Bhopal gas-leak tradegy' (spelling) and 'group of student' (pluralization). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more sophisticated or precise terminology would be required to reach a higher band. The spelling errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a group of student left' (should be 'students'), 'keep themselve' (should be 'themselves'), and 'ambulance is not available' (missing article). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. The control over punctuation is generally good, and the sentence variety is sufficient to maintain interest. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to increase the accuracy of their complex sentences.
