In some areas of the US, a 'curfew' is imposed, in which teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

'Curfew' is considered as a state of emergency and imposed in situations like wars, protests, and natural or man-made disasters. Curfew has certain conditions like teenagers are not allowed outside their residences during the particular time especially the night without their guardians. I completely agree with this condition, because this is implemented for their safety and well-being.

To commence with, going outside alone at night in situations like wars, riots, and disasters could be dangerous for the young individuals, as they do not have any experience of dealing with such challenging conditions. Likewise, teenagers are often influenced by movies and series, so they might act irresponsibly in disasters such as floods, earthquakes and cyclones. For instance, in India, a group of students left their hostel at night during the Bhopal gas-leak tragedy and ended up in a hospital because of difficulty in breathing. Consequently, the government has announced strict measures during curfews in order to prevent such incidents and increase the safety of public.

Moreover, not only teenagers but also their guardians or parents should avoid going out of their homes in restricted hours unless there is a medical emergency. Since people are highly disappointed and aggressive during protests, going out might be problematic for adults as well. If there is a severe medical emergency and ambulance is not available, individuals should inform their local police before heading towards the hospital for treatment. This can alert the police force and sometimes they may come to assist you on the way to hospital.

To sum up, such laws are made for the safety of society. Teenagers should completely avoid going out in restrictive conditions without their parents. Even though, guardians should keep themselves extra alert and avoid stepping outside their residences unless medical assistance is required for someone.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. You addressed the prompt by discussing the safety benefits of curfews for teenagers. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a relevant example regarding the Bhopal gas-leak, the connection to a standard teenage curfew is slightly tenuous, as that was a specific disaster scenario rather than a general social policy. To reach a higher band, ensure your arguments are more directly focused on the specific context of teenage curfews in the US, rather than conflating them with emergency state-of-war measures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Likewise', 'Consequently', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single, distinct aspect of the argument. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the link between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better integrate your points about teenagers and adults.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'residences', 'restrictive conditions', and 'medical emergency'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'disappointed' to describe people during protests, where 'frustrated' or 'agitated' would be more precise. You also use 'curfew' repeatedly; using synonyms or paraphrasing would improve the flow. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the ambulance is not available' (should be 'an ambulance') and 'Even though, guardians should...' (where 'Even though' is used incorrectly as a transition). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositions throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for small grammatical slips will help improve your accuracy.
