Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the curfew, but the development of ideas is limited and sometimes confusing. The argument regarding 'red alert areas' and 'prostitutes' is not clearly linked to the general concept of a teenage curfew, making the position difficult to follow. While the essay touches on safety and crime, the reasoning is often underdeveloped or illogical, such as the suggestion that allowing teenagers into dangerous areas would help them focus on their studies. The response lacks a clear, consistent stance throughout the essay, which is a requirement for higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover', but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately. For instance, the transition to the counter-argument in the fourth paragraph is abrupt and the logic within that paragraph is hard to follow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'it' to refer to complex ideas, which creates ambiguity.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'reputational family', 'roughly life', and 'they kidnap it'. The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but the lack of precision often impedes the clarity of the message. To improve, the student needs to focus on using words in their correct context and expanding their range of synonyms to avoid repeating basic terms like 'youngster' and 'areas'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often affect the flow of reading. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'A situation of curfew is applies', 'youngster are not entered'), article usage, and sentence structure. While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, these are often faulty, leading to confusion. Punctuation is also inconsistent. The high frequency of errors means that the reader must often re-read sentences to understand the intended meaning, which is characteristic of a lower band score.
