Student answer (Band 6.5)
In some parts of the America, teenager are prohibited from going outside unless accompanied by an adult. Although i understand the reasons behind introducing these curfews, I believe they are not always the best solution and should be applied flexibly.
One argument in the favor of curfews is that it can protect teenagers from dangerous situations. Young people who are outside at night are more likely to become victims of crime or antisocial behavior. A curfew can therefore give parents a sense of security and encourage youngsters to spend more time in safe environment. For example, in areas where there are high rates of crime at night, restricting teenager from going outside could alone reduce their exposure to potentially dangerous situations.
Another benefit of imposing curfews is that it may help parents establish clear rules and teach children about responsibility. Adolescents sometimes make impulsive decisions without fully considering the consequences. having a fixed time to return home will help them develop good habits and understand that their freedom comes with some responsibilities.
However, i do not think that strict curfew should apply to every individual. Young people have different level of maturity, or some have legitimate reasons for being outside late. For instance, some individuals may have an evening job, attending a sports practice, studying at library, or coming home from a study event. In such cases, a blanket curfew could unfairly restrict responsible young people and create unnecessary difficulty for their families.
In my view, a better approach would be to combine reasonable legal curfews with parents judgement. Curfews could apply in high-risk areas or during unusually late hours while exceptions could be made for some teenagers who coming back from school or job.
In conclusion, teenagers curfew can improve safety and help parents set boundaries but excessively strict rules may interfere with responsible teenagers' independence. There curfews should be reasonable flexible and adapted to the situations rather than imposed universally.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that curfews have benefits but should be applied flexibly. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as mentioning evening jobs or sports practice as legitimate reasons for being out. The argument is developed logically throughout the essay. The position is consistent from the introduction to the conclusion, and the points regarding safety and parental responsibility are clearly articulated. To reach a higher band, the student could further extend the discussion on the potential negative impacts of such curfews on social development or personal freedom to provide a more nuanced analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'For example', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. While the structure is sound, some of the referencing is slightly repetitive, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall arrangement of the argument is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'antisocial behavior', 'legitimate reasons', and 'blanket curfew'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in the favor of' (should be 'in favor of') and 'reasonable flexible' (should be 'reasonably flexible'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding the use of more precise academic collocations would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'teenager are' (should be 'teenagers are'), 'some have legitimate reasons' (should be 'some teenagers have'), and 'who coming back' (should be 'who are coming back'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' used throughout. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that complex structures are formed accurately, particularly when using relative clauses and participial phrases.
