Student answer (Band 6.0)

A new rule is enacted in some regions of America under which teenagers cannot go out of their homes alone after the specific time at night. Although it puts some restrictions on teenagers, I personally think it is for the safety of children.

The primary reason why teenagers are not allowed to be out of doors after a particular time at night unless they are accompanied by an adult is the increasing crime. When children go outside alone, they are potential to exposed to crime. Criminals look for the opportunity when teenagers are alone, it is convenient for criminals to get benefit of the situation. If children go out with their guardians, the safety will be ensured.

Another factor behind the curfew is imposed in which teenagers do not go out of doors at night is to ensure the safety of teenagers. Since teenagers are not much experienced, they can get into any unexpected situation such as encountering wild animal. If children are with their parents or elders because of the new rule, guardians can take appropriate action. As a result, young people are more safe under this law.

I personally think this law is not only beneficial for children but also it reduces the stress of parents because children are less likely to go into dangerous situation.

To sum up, while imposing a new law can have some challenges for people, the benefits are far more for the safety of children. I think it is really positive step taken by the government to enact rule in some areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of the curfew. The ideas are relevant, focusing on crime prevention and general safety. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the second and third paragraphs both focus on 'safety' without providing distinct, well-extended arguments. The mention of 'wild animals' as a reason for a curfew in the US is a weak, unrealistic example that detracts from the logical development of the argument. To improve, you should focus on more plausible societal benefits or drawbacks and ensure each paragraph offers a unique, well-supported point.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The primary reason', 'Another factor', and 'To sum up', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Another factor behind the curfew is imposed in which teenagers do not go out of doors'. The referencing is sometimes repetitive, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'enacted' and 'guardians'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'they are potential to exposed to crime' (should be 'potentially exposed') and 'get benefit of the situation' (should be 'take advantage of'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but the lack of precision and occasional awkward phrasing limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'A new rule is enacted' (should be 'A new rule has been enacted'), 'the curfew is imposed in which teenagers do not go out' (awkward phrasing), and 'young people are more safe' (should be 'safer'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of minor errors in verb tense and sentence construction prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The majority of sentences are not error-free.
