Student answer (Band 6.0)

With increasing inflation and growing economic crisis , theft has been on a rapid increase all over the United States of America. Every single day there is news regarding somebody getting robbed and might even getting killed which takes away my heart. Robbery and killings are spreading like wild fire and parents have been really worried throughout the country for their kids safety.

Several devastating incidents in south downtown area of Chicago has also called for a curfew for teenagers. They are not allowed to leave their houses past 10pm unless they are accompanied by an adult. One horrifying incident that I recollect is a 14 year old teenager named Manas walking through intersection of 9th and Angels street in south Chicago downtown area after his classes. He was walking peacefully and crossing the intersection and group of three robbers, followed him and asked for any jewellery and cash in his possession. He was shocked and scared for his life. He removed his gold chain without taking any time and gave his wallet to them. As soon as they saw a car coming from end of the street and ran away.

This incident was just one of many that is currently happening all over the USA. Every teenager is scared to step out of the house even to go to the school and parents remain anxious until the time the kids are back home. Why wouldn't they? If you are thinking Manas's incident was horrific , wait to hear what happened with Sunita. She was walking back from a supermarket around 6pm towards her home and was robbed and raped. This terrifying act made every one around the world go numb and eventually led to a curfew imposition in some areas in the USA.

In my opinion , these act of violence should be punished rigorously and an example should be set for everyone so nobody can ever think of committing one. This in turn will also allow people to have their freedom and no impositions of curfew would be a requirement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt regarding the curfew for teenagers, though the focus heavily leans into narrating personal anecdotes and sensationalised examples rather than critically discussing the merits and drawbacks of the policy itself. The response provides a personal opinion in the final paragraph, suggesting that violent acts should be punished rigorously instead of imposing curfews. While ideas are present and the prompt is touched upon, the main position on the curfew policy remains somewhat unclear and under-developed, as the bulk of the text is spent on detailed crime stories rather than argumentative analysis. Overall, this performance aligns best with Band 5.5, which is rounded to a 5.0 for task response due to the heavy reliance on narrative over analytical reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays some logical organisation, moving from an introduction of crime to specific examples and finally to a concluding opinion. However, paragraphing is somewhat inconsistent; the second and third body paragraphs contain heavy narrative blocks without clear transitional links. Cohesive devices are occasionally used, but referencing is sometimes imprecise, as seen in abrupt shifts between ideas and stories about 'Manas' and 'Sunita'. The overall progression feels a bit disjointed due to the heavy storytelling approach. Paragraphing needs to be used more effectively to separate distinct arguments rather than grouping unrelated anecdotes. This level of cohesion and structural management corresponds to Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to communicate basic points, using phrases like 'growing economic crisis', 'spreading like wild fire', and 'curfew imposition'. However, there are notable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'takes away my heart' instead of heavy emotional idioms, and awkward phrasing like 'south downtown area'. Spelling and word-form errors also appear, though they do not severely impede communication. The use of less common lexical items is somewhat limited and occasionally unnatural. Because the vocabulary satisfies the basic task requirements while displaying noticeable errors, it fits comfortably into the Band 6.0 descriptor range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at variety with conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'If you are thinking Manas's incident was horrific...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as missing articles ('a 14 year old teenager', 'from end of the street'), incorrect prepositions ('walking through intersection'), and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation around commas is occasionally faulty, with unnecessary spaces before punctuation marks. While these errors do not completely obscure meaning, they occur regularly and impact the overall accuracy of the writing. This performance reflects the criteria for Band 5.5, rounded to a 6.0 for displaying a workable mix of structures.
