Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some cities in the US have different sets of rules that are enforced by the federal government. This essay will examine what curfew rules are imposed and the reasons for imposing them.
There has been an increase in AMBER alerts in some area of the US. This pattern has been observed in the cities are closer to international borders. Due to this reason, curfew has been imposed, under which teenagers are not allowed to be outdoors after sunset unless they are accompanied by an adult. There have been multiple cases of abductions. For instance, a 15 year-old girl was abducted after she was returning home from her friends place which was just two blocks away.
I agree with this curfew because no suspects have been identified or caught. Law enforcement is still trying to gather leads and come up with the next steps. Parents should be recommended to keep track on their kids. For instance, parents should know the location of their kids using GPS installed on their phone. This would help determine their whereabouts at all times. Additionally, kids should also take precautions and be vigilant about their surroundings and should avoid talking to the strangers. I would recommend if they can learn some self-defense course such as karate or boxing. This might help them in case of an emergency.
In conclusion, kids and parents are equally responsible for following this curfew to avoid any unfortunate incidences and should follow rules imposed by the law enforcement. Additionally, parents should take extra precautions by make using of technology and equipping their kids using technical devices like mobile phone or AirTags.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing with the curfew and providing supporting reasons, such as rising abductions and the need for public safety. The introduction outlines the essay's focus, and the body paragraphs offer relevant examples like the 15-year-old girl and parental precautions. However, the explanation of the link between AMBER alerts, international borders, and curfews feels slightly disjointed, and the arguments could be developed with greater depth to reach higher band levels. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed, and a clear stance is maintained throughout, satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.5 or 7.0. Given the clear positioning and relevant support, a Band 6.0 is awarded as ideas are present but somewhat under-developed in places.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as the background in paragraph two and the author's opinion in paragraph three. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or overused, as seen with the repetitive use of 'For instance' and 'Additionally'. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression between sentences occasionally falters, such as the abrupt transition in the second paragraph regarding AMBER alerts and international borders. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate for the task, matching the Band 6 descriptor where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating appropriate terms such as 'law enforcement', 'abductions', 'whereabouts', and 'vigilant'. There are, however, some lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'recommend to keep track on their kids' instead of 'keep track of', and 'make using of technology' instead of 'making use of'. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the writer's ideas clearly. The range of vocabulary and minor errors align well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional clauses ('unless they are accompanied by an adult') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions throughout the text, including 'cities are closer to international borders' (missing word/relative pronoun), 'track on their kids', 'talking to the strangers' (unnecessary article), and 'equipping their kids using technical devices'. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede overall communication. This balance of mixed structures and persistent errors fits the Band 6 profile for grammatical range and accuracy.
