Student answer (Band 6.5)
In some regions of united states, youngsters are prohibited from some outdoor activities especially at night unless they are under the supervision of a responsible adult. Although some people believe that curfews restrict the freedom and independence of young people. I strongly opine that curfews are a good way to ensure the safety of teenagers by preventing their involvement in illegal and dangerous activities.
One of the major reasons is to impose the safety of young children. During late night hours, there may be few people with criminal psychology on streets, so there are more risks of accidents and crimes. For example, young people may not be able to protect themselves from any drug addict or criminal as they do not have proper experience to tackle with this kind of dangerous situation and their safety may be compromised in this case. Furthermore, if teenagers are returning back from work or school they may become an easy target of any crime or harassment if they are not accompanied by an experienced person.
Moreover, a curfew may discourage young citizens from illegal activities such as alcohol, drugs, robbery and any other antisocial activities. A reasonable curfew may set clear boundaries for children and they spend most of their time with their family. For instance, parents can monitor their behavior and activities easily when there is a restricted nighttime routine.
However, I believe that curfews should be implemented reasonably rather than excessively. Teenagers should have some rights to enjoy their independence and should be able to enjoy some events and activities with their friends and classmates as well. Exceptions are there so they may be with some adult in some cases for their safety reasons.
In conclusion, I strongly support teenager curfews at night as it secure them from antisocial activities. Nevertheless, teenagers should have enough freedom to enjoy their spare time without any restrictions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant reasons and examples. The introduction clearly states the writer's opinion in favor of curfews for safety. Body paragraphs explore valid points such as the risk of crime and the benefit of deterring antisocial behaviors like drug and alcohol use. Ideas are generally well-extended, although the final body paragraph introduces a slight contradiction by stating that curfews should be implemented reasonably and exceptions made, which slightly blurs the sharpness of the absolute stance taken in the introduction. Nonetheless, the core requirements of the task are well covered, matching the Band 7 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, well-defined body paragraphs focusing on safety and deterrence, a counter-perspective/moderation paragraph, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'One of the major reasons', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover'. However, some cohesive elements feel slightly mechanical, and referencing occasionally lacks absolute precision, such as in the sentence 'Exceptions are there so they may be with some adult in some cases for their safety reasons', which disrupts the natural flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, earning a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0, fitting firmly at Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'criminal psychology', 'antisocial activities', and 'monitor their behavior'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as writing 'united states' instead of 'the United States', 'impose the safety' instead of 'ensure safety', and 'returning back' (redundancy). Spelling and word formation errors also appear, for example, 'drug addict' where 'drug addicts' or 'drug addiction' would be more precise. Communication is never impeded, but these minor errors place the response at Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'unless they are under the supervision', 'if teenagers are returning back'). However, there are frequent minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'tackle with this kind of dangerous situation' ('tackle' does not take 'with' here) and 'it secure them' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but sentence boundary issues occur, such as a fragmented sentence structure in the introduction ('Although some people believe that curfews restrict the freedom and independence of young people. I strongly opine...'). These errors place the grammatical control securely at Band 6.
