Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is argued that, the curfew is imposed in some parts of the US, because of this the children are not allowed to go outside in night time unless they are accompanied by an adult. Majority of the people are in the favour of this decision, whether some oppose this step of the government. In the upcoming essay I will explain why this curfew is important for the teenagers.

The most important reason to support this action is human trafficking. In recent years the cases of human trafficking have increased specially in the US, and most of them are teenagers as it is easy to manipulate them. For instance, there is a high possibility that if someone is kidnapping then they will look for the easy target and teenagers are always become the soft target compare to the adults because of the physical and mental strength. Furthermore, in night time there are many dangerous animals does hunting, and because of this the life of the younger ones could be in the danger as they can not compete with them. So having an adult with them become significant to avoid these dangers.

On the other hand, some says that this will cause the fear of nights in teenagers, and they will never get out of that. To explain this, if any teenagers will find that night out can be the risky, then this fear can cause sun drawning in them for the entire life. So, the government should think twice on this decision.

To conclude, although sun drawning or fear of nights could become the permanent parts of their life, saving the teenagers from human trafficking and hunting animals are more important.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the curfew on teenagers and presenting a clear personal opinion in favor of the rule. The student introduces relevant ideas, such as the threat of human trafficking, which aligns well with the prompt. However, some arguments lack full development or logical grounding, notably the assertion that dangerous hunting animals pose a significant night-time threat in urban or residential US areas where curfews are typically imposed. While the position is clear throughout, the support provided tends to generalize and stretches plausibility in places. This places the response comfortably at Band 6.0, as it addresses the task adequately and puts forward relevant ideas, even though some points are somewhat under-developed or unconvincing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, such as human trafficking and wildlife concerns in the second paragraph, from the counterargument regarding psychological fear in the third paragraph. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly deployed, as seen in phrases like 'In the upcoming essay I will explain' and 'To explain this'. Referencing and logical progression occasionally falter, leading to a somewhat disjointed flow between sentences. Based on these features, the response fits the Band 6 descriptor, where the overall structure is coherent, but referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'human trafficking', 'manipulate them', and 'permanent parts of their life'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and odd word choices, notably 'sun drawning' to describe psychological trauma or fear, which appears to be a severe misuse of terminology. Other minor infelicities occur, such as 'does hunting' instead of 'hunt'. Because the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points but contains recurrent lexical errors and unnatural collocations that impede precision, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses like 'if someone is kidnapping then they will look for the easy target'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors with articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'in night time', 'does hunting', and 'teenagers are always become the soft target'. Punctuation is also problematic in places, particularly with unnecessary commas disrupting sentence flow. Because the errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader despite a reasonable attempt at complex forms, the writing aligns with Band 5.0.
