Student answer (Band 6.5)

Recent developments have propelled the fact that teenagers in some areas of the US are not allowed to be outdoors after a specific time at night to the forefront of their safety. They are only allowed to go out if they are with an adult. In my opinion, this is a positive development, which will enhance the safety of adolescents. This essay will not only provide reasons but also provide relevant examples related to that topic.

To begin with, one significant reason for this kind of curfew is that teenagers are not fully aware of what is right or wrong. This can lead to creating a safe society for them because most of the unethical activities happen during nighttime. For instance, I have observed that child abuse and rape mostly occur at night. In past studies, it has been found that the crime rate is much higher after midnight. This curfew is crucial because it is related to the welfare of society.

Another reason is the health of growing children. It is often believed that nights are supposed to be for sleeping. For example, teenagers have been taught the importance of regular eight to nine hours of nighttime sleep, which has improved their overall health if they follow the routine. However, for any reason, if they need to go out, then an adult must be with them, which is very thoughtful for their safety.

In conclusion, some cities in the US have high crime rates. Therefore, teenagers need to avoid going out during the specified time, as it is related to their safety.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on teenage curfews and supporting it with logical arguments. The essay clearly states the writer's opinion that the curfew is a positive development for adolescent safety. Main ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing the correlation between nighttime hours and increased crime rates, as well as the importance of regular sleep for growing children. Examples provided, such as the mention of child abuse and rape occurring mostly at night, contribute to the discussion, though some points could be elaborated further. Overall, the response meets the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0 in Task Achievement, demonstrating a clear overall stance and addressing the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with an introduction that outlines the writer's stance, followed by body paragraphs exploring specific reasons, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'For instance', and 'Another reason' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct arguments cleanly. However, referencing and transitions are at times a bit mechanical, which prevents the essay from reaching higher bands. The overall structure is coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'adolescents', 'welfare', 'correlation', and 'unethical activities'. There are occasional awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'propelled the fact... to the forefront of their safety', which sound slightly unnatural or imprecise. However, these minor lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate throughout the response. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary with mixed success, placing this response comfortably in the Band 6.0 range for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. Examples such as 'This can lead to creating a safe society for them because most of the unethical activities happen during nighttime' showcase a reasonable structural variety. There are some minor errors in grammar and punctuation, such as preposition usage and awkward phrasing in the introductory sentence, but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences remain clear. The level of grammatical control matches the Band 6.0 descriptors well.
